NEW ASPH ADHD service referral guide April 2016

From 1st April 2016 the CAMHS department at Surrey and Borders Partnership Mental Health Trust has been commissioned to provide a pathway for the diagnosis and management of children and young people with mental health disorders in Surrey. This includes a single point of access (SPA) for children who are suspected of havingmental health disorders and we are delighted to be working alongside CAMHS in diagnosing children with ADHD.When children are seen at ASPH, they will also be able to access psychosocial support such as parent training and cognitive behaviour therapy provided by CAMHS.

Our clinic is suitable for diagnosing and managing children with moderate or severe ADHD but only if they do NOT have significant co-morbidity such as Autism, Conduct Disorder or Mood Disorder.

For the moment, if you wish your patient to be seen at ASPH, please send your referral directly to us rather than via the Beacon SPA managed by SABP. It may be possible as the pathway matures for all referrals to go through Beacon and we will write to you again if this becomes the case.In order to speed up the process for your patient and ensure they are seen in the right clinic first time wherever possible, we do need specific information prior to seeing the child. Hopefully, this will avoid your patients being passed between services as has so often happened in the past. We need completedSNAP questionnaires from home and school. These have already been provided to all local GP practices and are available in electronic form in your surgery. The SNAP questionnaires are essential to ensure the patient gets the service they require. In order to screen out Autism which is all managed either by CAMHS or your local community paediatric service, we also require theAustralian Scale Questionnaire (ASQ)to be filled in by parents and teachers and sent with the referral letter. Both ASQ and SNAP forms are also available on our website if you, parents or teachers wish to download them.

To assist in the process of referral and triaging to the right service, please send your referral using the attached referral form which should be available electronically in your practice as well and saves the need to generate an additional referral letter.

When completing the referral form please ensure you give us as many details as possible and, in particular, inform us if there is a family history of ADHD and if there are any safeguarding concerns.

Before sending us a referral, please consider these 4 questions:

Is it likely that this child/ young person has Autism?

  • Does the child/young person have any tendency to severe violence and physical aggression or cruelty to people?
  • Does the young person have any criminal record?
  • Does the child/young person have any evidence of depression or self-harming?

If the answer to any of these questions is ‘YES,’please refer directly to CAMHS (or Community Paediatricians for autism assessment under 5 years of age).
