A)Asian Asian American Studies and Chicano and Latino Studies

1)New Course: ASAM 342 and CHLS 342

Chicano and Filipino Popular Cultures, 3 units at C2; Request for General Education Category C1 & Human Diversity

Discussion:

  • Postponed from meeting #12
  • Change form to Explorations; right now you have a Capstone form
  • Course descriptions need to specify course is the same as the other one
  • C1 justification and not social sciences? Representatives want Fine Arts
  • Understand resource limitations for team-taught seminars
  • Recommend wording that allows team-teaching flexibility
  • Pg. 5 Methods of Assessment Beachboard responses unclear; is the instructor evaluating the responses or are students? Who is doing the evaluating?
  • Clarify film use; be wary of too much film viewing in the classroom

Motion to approve ASAM 342 & CHLS342 with recommended changes passed (MSP)

B) Religious Studies

1)New Course: RST 332. Islam Today. 3 units at a C2.

2nd Read (previous EPCC #16 SP ’06)

GE request for IC, C2b, and Global

Discussion:

  • Review documents for grammar and spelling corrections
  • SCO Methods of Evaluation too specific; may hinder instructor flexibility
  • Recommend including a discussion on how skills will be developed
  • Email from Comp. Literature not attached
  • Interdisciplinary justification very vague
  • Be more specific – History? Philosophy? Comp. Lit?
  • Solicit advice from various department curriculum chairs
  • Recommend Political Science
  • Last six suggested Weekly Topics are all on individuals
  • GE justifications needs to be stronger and more detailed or remove

Motion to approve RST 332 postponed pending rewrite and reconsideration of GE status

C)General Education Recertification Process:

Lisa Maxfield. GE Coordinator

Discussion:

  • GE is at a crossroads; there needs to be changes
  • As of 2005-2006, started to see first wave of new policy recertifications
  • Result: Many people don’t understand General Education
  • Process doesn’t have any meaning anymore
  • Looking for thoughtful narrative
  • We have to change how we think and report what we do in our courses
  • WASC: GE should be considered a Program of Study and, as a result,a Program Review must be completed
