BOOK OF THE WEEK – FEAST FOR 10

Steps
  1. Invite children to sit on the floor in a circle and place the basket with pictures in the center
  2. Explain to children that when it is their turn, they should listen very carefully to the words in the song so they know what to find in the basket
  3. Chant or sing the basket game song:

A tisket, a tasket, a very brown basket. Can you find the pumpkin, the pumpkin, the pumpkin?

  • The underlined words above can be swapped out, depending on what your container looks like and which food you are prompting the child to find
  1. The child whose turn it is can then reach into the basket to find the picture of whichever food you mentioned
  2. Once the child has retrieved the correct picture, ask children what color it is and if they recognize it
  3. Invite the child to return the picture to the basket and start again, giving a new child a turn
Introducing the Activity
  • Sing a song. “10 Little Monkeys”
  • Revisit the book. Remind children of Feast for 10 and revisit the foods featured in it, asking children about their names, shapes, and colors.
  • Make connections.Ask children if they have ever gone grocery shopping before. Who were they with? What did they buy? Invite them to gather the photos of food and put them in the basket for the game.

ideas for incorporatng:
  • Extended talk. Describe your actions and encourage children to describe their own.
  • I see a picture of some leafy greens. Who likes eating lettuce? What can you make with it?
  • Carlos is looking very carefully for the picture of the pumpkin. What color is the pumpkin again?
  • Skill development.
  • Colors and textures: Brown potatoes; green bunches; red tomatoes
  • Shapes and sizes:Big, roundpumpkin; longdill pickles; smallbeans
  • Numbers:Now let’s retell the story, counting the numbers of each food we have: two pumpkins….
  • Attention: Remind children to listen very carefully to the song for the special food name
  • Free play.Invite children to use the container and food pictures to pretend they are grocery shopping with each other. They might enjoy spreading the pictures out around the room and then collecting them.
  • All ages.Younger children may have a difficult time connecting the food you sing to the right picture. You can adjust this activity by inviting them to pick a card and then help them identify it afterwards.
