Meeting 2924

Pamela Rajkowski -Afghan Cameleers of Australia - 1860-1924

Pamela is a research author specialising in the history, heritage and contribution of the Australian Afghan Cameleers ( 1860 - 1930), regularly collaborating with Afghan Cameleer descendants across Australia. Although her research is founded on a range of secondary sources ( eg archives, newspapers,), it is enriched by conversations with descendants across Australia. She has published three books – “In the tracks of the Camelmen”,”Linden Girl”, and “Beltana and Beyond”.

Outback Australia has always proved both a temptation and a threat to settlers. Since the mid 1800s when explorers first penetrated its vastness, the harsh climate has claimed the lives of both people and livestock. Far from established towns, the early settlers, graziers, pastoralists and miners had to rely on supplies transported over great distances. The animals traditionally used for carrying - horses, donkeys and bullocks - were unable to survive such conditions.Only camels could withstand the relentless heat and drought. For over fifty years, camels acted as a lifeline for the inland regions. With their Indian and Afghan drivers, they forged new paths across the heart of Australia. Camel strings brought stores, mail, building materials and fodder to the isolated settlement and returned to the coast with produce for local and overseas markets. A network of camels tracks, or ''pads'' was formed, linking the goldfields of Western Australia with coastal centres, passing up the Strzelecki, Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks to Queensland and the Northern Territory, and joining the New South Wales properties west of the Darling River with south-western Queensland. The Indian and Afghan camelmen established their own settlements - the ''Ghan towns'' - on the outskirts of country towns. Here they set up communities which followed the customs and traditions of their homelands. Many camelmen were Moslems, so they built mosques, they prepared their meat in the way their religion required and they kept their wives out of sight. This way of life, so alien to most Australians, was an integral part of outback life in years gone,by their crucial contribution to the opening up of this continent and to Australia's growth, development and prosperity.

Pamela has many more tales to tell and fitted lots of information in a short time Thank you Pamela.
