Purpose
To ensure that the board is comprised of individuals who possess the skills, qualities and experience to collectively contribute to effective board governance, and to assist the board in identifying qualified individuals to become board members.
Composition of Board
The composition of the board will consist of: President, Executive Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Immediate Past President, Committee Chairs and the 14 Region Vice Presidents.
Term of Office
An elected director is elected to the board for a term of two years.Elected officers shall assume their duties June 1st of the year elected. No officer shall serve more than three (3) consecutive terms in the same office. An officer who has served more than half of a term shall be considered to have served one term.
Minimum Requirements
Applicantsmust meet minimum criteria.Applicantswhodo not meet the listed minimum requirements will not be considered.
- Direct experience with AFPAGis a mandatory requirement. Experience can be in the form of service on a committee, or service as a County Association President under AFPAG.
- All applicantsmust agree to the time and travel commitments required to serve on the AFPAG Board of Directors. Your employer should also agree that you can meet these requirements.
- Each applicantshould be proficientin most of the Microsoft data platform technologies to be considered eligible.
- As outlined in the AFPAG Bylaws, to become a member of the AFPAG Board of Directors, you must be fluent in written and spoken English.
- You must have and maintain a current “Open Caregiver Home” and have no past or current investigations of your home pending. However, if all is in satisfactory status with your local DFCS office, you are allowed to maintain “Closed” status as long as it was voluntary.

Applicants must meet the minimum reference requirements outlined below.
- All mandatory reference requirements must be met and will be included in the public version of the application.Applicants must provide a minimum of three (3) references up to a maximum of five (5). At least one (1) reference MUST be from a DFCS County Director or Regional Director.

- Monitor and promote the Association’s positive member and financial growth
- Articulate and advocate for Foster and Adoptive Families.
- Support all Board approved decisions
- Uphold and promote the mission and values of the Association
Recommended Qualifications
The following offers a guideline for what the Nomination Committee and Board look for in candidates. These are qualifications that most successful AFPAG Directors have possessed.
- Experience serving on other boards, such as home owner associations, church boards, college advisory committees, DFCS County Boards, etc.
- Demonstrable ability to communicate effectively in writing, for example, through an active blog, published articles or books, or other forms of proven writing experience.
- A proven track record of leadership in a volunteer role.
- Experience understanding the budgeting process.
- Understanding of the structure and day-to-day operations of AFPAG.
- Demonstrated success working within a team environment, including the ability to work hand in hand with DFCS and DHS workers. In addition to working with the Board, Directors will be working with and advocating forFoster Families that are based in their geographic region.
- Member in good standing of the Adoptive and Foster Parent Association of Ga. for at least three consecutive years prior to filing for candidacy.
- Able to represent the Association at all levels.
Required Skills and Knowledge
- Long term planning and strategic thinking.
- Developed leadership skills, change management experience, and demonstrated experience managing a business organization.
- Awareness and appreciation of Georgia’s Information Governance issues, including legislative and privacy requirements.
Required Time Commitments
These are the time commitments you will be expected to maintain as a AFPAG Director.Please note that the time required fluctuates and some weeks will be more or less busy than others.
- Commit time required to the term of office set by the AFPAG Bylaws (2 years).
- Attend AFPAGconference each year.
- Attend three to four in-face Board meetings per year, consisting of 1 day of in-person meetingsset forth quarterly, usually on Saturday.
- Be available to participate in one 1-hour call per month.
- Weekly commitment for projects/discussions/advocating – average 2-3 hours/week.
- Attend special conferences or meetings called by the AFPAGPresident.
Ranking Procedure
The Board of Directors will rank all applicants from highest to lowest overall score and share information amongst fellow Board of Director members tocreate the final candidate slate.
