(Last revised April 2005)

TRAFFIC ENGINEERING AND OPERATIONS DIVISION

Method of Test for

PAVEMENT MARKING SAMPLING OF LONGITUDINAL AND

TRANSVERSE LINES, LEGENDS, AND SYMBOLS FOR

RETROREFLECTOMETER TESTING

Proposed Change #1:

Add a paragraph under 2. EQUIPMENT:

2.2.3 Performtesting in dry conditions on clean , smooth* surfaces and free from snow

plowing activity .

(*test results are significantly compromised on milled, tined and/or other

coarse surfaces, i.e. Oil & Chip)

Proposed Change #2:

Revise sampling criteria in chart under paragraph 4.1:

Current Requirements:

Zone of
Measurement / Length of
Checkpoint
Area / Number of Test
Point
Measurements
within
Checkpoint Area / Acceptance
Criteria
All Legends and
Symbols / Each letter and
symbol is a
checkpoint area / 3 test point
measurements on
each letter and symbol, in the direction of travel / Calculate the average
of all test points from
Each legend, symbol
or transverse line. If
the average falls
below the specified
retroreflectivity
requirements, the marking is
unacceptable.
All Transverse
Lines / Each
transverse line is a checkpoint
area / 6 test point measurements on
each transverse
line, in the direction of travel

Proposed Requirements:

Measurement / Length of
Checkpoint
Area / Number of Test
Point
Measurements
within
Checkpoint Area / Acceptance
Criteria
All Legends and
Symbols / Each legend and
symbol is a
checkpoint area / 3 test point
measurements on
one letter of each legend, and on each symbol, in the direction of travel / Calculate the average
of all test points from
each legends, symbols
or transverse lines and markings. If
the average falls
below the specified
retroreflectivity
requirements, the marking is
unacceptable.
Transverse
Lines:
24” stop lines, 6” crosswalk lines / Each
transverse line is a checkpoint
area / 3 test point measurements on
each checkpoint area, in the direction (or opposite direction) the line was placed.

each checkpoint
area, in the direction (or opposite direction) the line was placed.
