When you summarized, did you do the following?

I summarized in a way that shows what I knew about the story and the story elements, e.g., character or events.

□In my summary, I wrote about the characters— their traits and wants.

□I also retold key events using sequence words, or I may have written about the problem and the solution.

□If the character learned a life lesson, I mentioned that in my summary.

Winn Dixie - Chapter 1 (Example)

This chapter begins with Opal, a preacher’s daughter, going to the grocery store. While she’s there, she encounters a stray dog running around creating a scene in the grocery store. Then the manager yells for the pound to be called, and Opal lies and claims that the dog is her own. This shows that she is brave and compassionate. She names the dog Winn Dixie like the grocery store. Finally, she nervously brings him home to meet the preacher.
