All Saints Day

Revelation 7:2-4, 9-14; 1 John 3:1-3;Matthew 5:1-12a [667]

The challenge of saint hood is to go where love takes me.

/ Come and join us for an hour of prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
Wednesdays, 8:00 – 9:00 PM
All are welcome!

“After this I had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands…’ ‘Beloved we are God’s children now, what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.’”

Today is our day, celebrating two events, what we are and what we shall be. We take a moment to look at Christian heroes, models for our Christian living, whose lives and accomplishments provide example and support. We look to well known friends of the Lord, and the countless number of persons who have gone before us as Christian missionaries. We call upon these brothers and sisters in the communion of saints, asking that they intercede for us. Who are the saints, both known and unknown?

The answer is found in the gospel of Matthew. They are the ‘people of the beatitudes.’ They reflect the many virtues spoken of by Jesus, being poor in spirit, meek, hurting, laboring for righteousness, showing mercy and compassion, pure in motives and apostles of peace. Consider your ‘favorite saint.’ Which beatitude best reflects your favorite saint’s virtues? Because they manifest these gifts, they have received their promised reward.

Celebrating this day of all the saints, pause and take a moment to reread the gospel passage and discover which traits best exemplify your Christian life. Which attribute in the beatitudes mirrors your life? Which one is less apparent and can be part of your Christian experience? As I pray over this I will become what He wants me to be, a living saint, a true friend of the Lord. Send yourself a greeting card on this your day.

MEN'S WINTER CLOTHING COLLECTION - The Social Justice Committee will be collecting Clothing for Men on Sat. Nov. 14 and Sun. Nov. 15 at the beginning of each Mass. Please place clothing in the labeled boxes (shirts, pants, etc.) on the tables in the Narthex. The clothing is for men who come to the HolyNameCenter for Homeless Men (18 Bleecker St.). In addition to clothing, the Center has requested Towels, as the men are able to shower at the shelter and Blankets as many men sleep outside. There will be a list in the rear of the church of the items requested. Please do not give Stained, Dirty, or Very Worn. Your help will be the fulfillment of what Jesus said: "I was naked and you clothed me” (Matthew 25, 36). If 3 or 4 parishioners at each Mass can help us for about half an hour before the Mass begins we would be very appreciative. Thank you.

In the October 8 issue of The TrumpetSean Fielder is a member of the board of the Dominican Foundation and he was interviewed by The Trumpet, the newsletter of the Dominican Friars. When asked how he first encountered the Dominicans: Sean replied:

Just of college, living in New York, I was, shall we say, less than enthusiastic in the practice of my faith. Sensing my lack of enthusiasm, my mother dragged me over to Holy Trinity Chapel at New YorkUniversity. That’s how it all began. The campus pastor there, Fr. John P. McGuire, O.P., was a real expert in drawing in young, not particularly well-catechized Catholics. I remember his insightful use of W. H. Auden and Kierkegaard in his homilies really piquing my interest. In 2005, on my first visit to the Dominican House of Studies in WashingtonD.C., I really got a sense of the Order beyond my local involvement. I was blown away by the caliber of the seminarians there and wanted to get involved in a big way.

Frá Matthew Festing (right), Grand Master of the Order of Malta, toured St Joseph’s with Fr. John McGuire in October, 2009.

Last weekend’s collection October 25 was $6,145.00
