ANGLICAN CHURCH UTRECHT

The Transfiguration

11am August 7, AD 2016

Transfiguration, Fra Angelico

Jesus was transfigured before them,

and his clothes became radiant, intensely white,

as no one on earth could bleach them.

And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses,

and they were talking with Jesus.

Mark 9:2-4
The Transfiguration

Opening Hymn: 248 ‘Tis good, Lord, to be here

The Collect: O God, who on the holy mount didst reveal to chosen witnesses thy well-beloved Son wonderfully transfigured: Mercifully grant unto us such a vision of his divine majesty, that we, being purified and strengthened by thy grace, may be transformed into his likeness from glory to glory; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Old Testament Lesson: Exodus 24:12-18

The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and wait there, that I may give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.” So Moses rose with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. And he said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we return to you. And behold, Aaron and Hur are with you. Whoever has a dispute, let him go to them.”

Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. The glory of the Lord dwelt on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days. And on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. Moses entered the cloud and went up on the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights.

This is the Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God

Psalm 84:1-7

1O how amiable ’ are thy ’ dwellings: thou ’ Lord ’ of ’ hosts!

2My soul hath a desire and longing, to enter into the ’ courts of the ’ Lord: my heart and my flesh rejoice ’ in the ’ living ’ God.

3Yea the sparrow hath found her an house, and the swallow a nest where she may ’ lay her ’ young: even thy altars, O Lord of hosts my ’ King and ’ my ’ God.

4Blessed are they that ’ dwell in thy ’ house: they will be ’ alway ’ praising ’ thee.

5Blessed is the man whose ’ strength is in ’ thee: in whose ’ heart are ’ thy ’ ways.

6Who going through the vale of misery, use it ’ for a ’ well: and the ’ pools are ’ filled with ’ water.

2nd Part:

7They will go from ’ strength to ’ strength: and unto the God of gods appeareth every ’ one of ’ them in ’ Sion.

Glory be to the Father ’ and to • the ’ Son : and ’ to the ’ Holy ’ Ghost;

As it was in the beginning is ’ now and • ever ’ shall be : world without ’ end. A ’ — ’ men.

New Testament Lesson: 1 John 3.1-3

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn: 206 We give immortal praise

Gospel Acclamation:

Alleluia(x4) Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the ‘ Ho – ly ‘ Spirit

One God who was and is and ‘ who - . is to ’ come.

Alleluia (x4)

The Gospel: St Mark 9.2-7

Before the Gospel we sing: Glory to you, O Lord

And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.”

After the Gospel is read we say: Praise to you, O Christ
