Study Guide on ancient Greece – Eventually, you will need to have study cards for each of the following objectives. On each note card you should have the objective on one side, the answer and a picture on the reverse side. Next to the number, you will see the number of cards required for each objective. Since these will be due soon, begin creating cards NOW as you learn each of the objectives.

Be prepared to share your knowledge of the following main objectives:

1. (3 cards) Alexander the Great spread ancient Greek ideas throughout parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa during his reign. Who was he? When did he rule? How did he manage to spread the ideas of ancient Greece?

2. (4 cards) Sparta and Athens were two very different city-states. Know why.

1 card=Athens; 1 card=Sparta; 1 card=similarities; 1 card=differences

3. (3 cards) Be able to describe at least one contribution from the ancient Greeks in the area of government. 1 card=what IS the contribution; 1 card=WHY is it a contribution; 1 card= describe the contribution

4. (6 cards) Be able to describe at least one contribution from the ancient Greeks in the area of architecture. 1 card=what IS the contribution; 1 card=WHY is it a contribution; 1 card= describe the contribution

Be able to recognize the three types of Greek columns (see below for help on remembering the columns).

5. (7 cards) Be able to discuss the following famous people of ancient Greece who we discussed in class: Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Homer (not Simpson! J), Alexander the Great, Sappho, and Pericles. Hint: Be able to talk about four REALLY well (one being Alexander the Great)

6. (2 cards) Choose two English words that have Greek origins, and be able to define the word parts and the definition (based on the meaning of the word parts).

7. (3 cards) Be able to describe at least one contribution from the ancient Greeks in the area of entertainment. 1 card=what IS the contribution; 1 card=WHY is it a contribution; 1 card= describe the contribution

8. (1 card) Know the dates of ancient Greece.

9. (2 cards) Be able to describe two Greek gods and what their “special powers” were.
