ContextLondon Gypsy and Traveller Unit (LGTU) is a well established charity since 1981. The organisation grew out of work managed by Save the Children until LGTU became independent in 1998. The board of trustees includes Travellers, supporters and interested professionals. The project has developed over the years in response to changing needs. Currently we have a team of 11 staff who mostly work part-time.
Our Purpose
We support Gypsies and Travellers living in London to influence decisions affecting their lives; to improve their quality of life and the opportunities available to them and to challenge the discrimination they routinely experience. In partnership with the community, LGTU uses its experience and expertise to contribute to the development of local, regional and national policy. Our work over the past 30 years has been possible because London Gypsies and Travellers trust LGTU to listen to their concerns and respond appropriately for the long term.
