Being noble. For Class Meeting on Friday, we examined three stories that highlight virtues, as we began a quest to learn what it means to be noble. Story one featuresa lesson in self-reliance, when a man cries out to Hercules for help before putting forth effort. In story two, Genghis Khan learns the importance of trusting our friends and not reacting in anger, when he behaves rashly, gravely wounding a faithful hawk that saved his life. Story three showcases a courageous and unselfish princess, who was willing to lay down her life for her kingdom, along with a brave knight who triumphs over the menacing dragon. While many of these virtues may seem lofty aspirations for eight and nine year olds, they serve as captivating touchstones, easily referenced for developmentally common playground, classroom, and larger life challenges. Next week we focus on more virtues, and students will create individual crests that proclaim the virtues they choose that will help them to live noble lives.

Grammar --Students will learn about compound and complex sentences. They will apply what they have learned to enhance their writing.

Reading –We will continue reading Judy Blume’s Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothingas a class, engaging in discussion and journaling our responses to literary prompts. Students have worked in groups to create posters of story elements and have worked individually to create WANTED posters of Fudge.
