CONTENT

2 Know about a range of sports injuries and their symptoms

Physiological responses:

damaged tissue, eg primary damage response, healing response, the clotting mechanism; the importance of scar tissue control in the re-modelling process;

specific to injury, eg sprain/ strain (signs and symptoms of first, second and third degree), haematomas (inter/intra)

Psychological responses:

response to injury, eg anger, anxiety, depression, frustration, isolated from team mates;

response to treatment and rehabilitation, eg anxiety, frustration, need for motivation, use of goal setting

3 Know how to apply methods of treating sports injuries

Types of sports injury

hard tissue damage, eg fracture, dislocation, stress fracture, shin splints;

soft tissue damage, eg haematoma, abrasion, sprain, strain, concussion, tendonitis (achilles, shoulder), tendon rupture, blister, cramp, tennis elbow, back pain, cartilage damage, friction burns

First aid

emergency/immediate treatment, eg priorities, resuscitation, shock, bleeding, unconscious casualty, fractures, prevention of infection, summon qualified assistance, accident report forms

Common treatments - RICED – protect, rest, ice, compression, elevation, diagnosis by professional, SALTAPS – (stop, ask, look, touch, active, passive strength), taping, bandaging, tubigrip, splints, hot/cold treatments, pain sprays limb supports, electrotherapy; medical referrals for specialist help as appropriate

ASSESSMENT GUIDANCE

PASS / P3 - Describe the physiological responses common to most sports injuries
P4 - Describe the psychological responses common to sports injuries
P5 - Describe first aid and common treatments used for four different types of sports injury
MERIT / M2 - Explain the physiological and psychological responses common to most sports injuries
DISTINCTION / D1 - Analyse the physiological and psychological responses common to most sports injuries

SCENARIO

You would like to help the Sport Physiotherapist with his work BUT before you can do this they have asked you to demonstrate your understanding of how the body responds to sports injuries. They would then like to see how you would treat four different types of sports injuries.

Produce a powerpoint presentation to show your understanding of the following:

Describe the common physiological response to injury. It may help your description to name examples of injuries and then say what physiological responses occur. To include:

-  Primary and secondary damage

-  Inflammatory response

-  Blood clotting

-  Fibroblastic repair

-  Maturation remodelling

-  Haematoma

(P3)

Physiological responses:

Damaged tissue, eg primary damage response, healing response, the clotting mechanism

The importance of scar tissue control in the re-modelling process

Specific to injury, eg sprain/ strain (signs and symptoms of first, second and third degree), haematomas (inter/intra)

Choose and research one of the following athletes:

1.  Tiger Woods

2.  Andrew Flintoff

3.  Jonny Wilkinson

4.  Eduardo da Silva

In powerpoint, produce a flow diagram explaining who the athlete is and their position/success in their sport.

Explain the nature of their injury(s). Use 1 slide to describe each step. See below for more information.

Describe the possible psychological responses/outcomes that the athlete would go through and how these could lead on to other responses.

Use the athletes personal circumstances and the issues surrounding their sport to support your suggestions. To include:

-  Denial

-  Anger

-  Frustration

-  Isolation from teammates

-  Anxiety

-  Acceptance

-  Need for motivation

-  Use of goal setting

(P4)

You decide that you would like to impress the Sport Physiotherapist. Produce a sporting report that goes on to:

Explain the psychological responses in more detail and suggest why they may happen.

Explain the physiological responses common to most sport injuries.

It may help to give examples of injuries and relate these to real athletes.

(M2)

Analyse why the physiological and psychological responses occur and suggest the potential impact on the athlete and their future performances, use real life scenarios to support your suggestions.

(D1)

Produce a report that demonstrates your knowledge of First Aid:

Describe the First Aid procedures and best practice treatment for 4 different sport injuries. Include at least 2 of the following:

-  Unconscious casualty

-  Fracture

-  Bleeding wound

-  Resuscitation

-  Shock

(P5)

Types of sports injury:

Hard tissue damage, eg fracture, dislocation, stress fracture, shin splints

Soft tissue damage, eg haematoma, abrasion, sprain, strain, concussion, tendonitis (achilles, shoulder), tendon rupture, blister, cramp, tennis elbow, back pain, cartilage damage, friction burns

First aid:

Emergency/immediate treatment, eg priorities, resuscitation, shock, bleeding, unconscious casualty, fractures, prevention of infection, summon qualified assistance, accident report forms

Common treatments:

PRICED – protect, rest, ice, compression, elevation, diagnosis by professional

SALTAPS – (stop, ask, look, touch, active, passive strength), taping, bandaging, tubigrip, splints, hot/cold treatments, pain sprays limb supports, electrotherapy

Medical referrals for specialist help as appropriate

Grading criteria: P3, P4, P5, M2, D1
