Tasks for Subcommittees

A.Identify any additional individuals needed for subcommittee

Bonita Campbell - contact person in Community College System

  1. Identify what currently is being done (and what is left undone) in the St. Louis region related to addressing the specific problems and needs on which the subcommittee is focused AND develop action plans to address needs

Subcommittee Focus: To promote the Missouri Comprehensive Guidance plan and to link career development with the Show-Me standards

Specific Action:

  1. In conjunction with construction and health care industries and educators for 8th and 10th grade classes, develop a pilot program/presentation that links workplace skills needed in the industry to math, science, language arts and/or other state standards (i.e., MAP in Missouri, ETC in Illinois). Program also would be connected to Missouri Comprehensive Guidance Plan as appropriate.
  1. Promote program to the larger community, including other schools and industries, after pilot has demonstrated success.
  1. Create a template for information-sharing between a particular trade and a particular educational grade level (including dos/donts for presenters, advance preparation for teachers and students, etc.)
  1. Develop additional programs/presentation in other trades/industries/fields, including focus on college preparation as well as vocational training.

  1. Rosanne will get word out through PathFinder.
  1. Barb, Gail, and Bill (and possibly Rosanne) will develop a committee to work out the details of the program/presentation. Each will recruit a representative from their constituency group.
  1. Rosanne will talk with Jennifer Irvin (BJC) about a health care component.
  1. A pilot program will be conducted through Barb’s and Gail's districts (SLPS and Riverview Gardens, respectively).
  1. Paul will provide some examples of other successful programs that link industry activities with education standards.
  1. Following successful pilot, Paul will put article in Careers magazine (depending on space).
  1. John will help promote to Superintendents, Curriculum and Instruction Coordinators, principals and math coordinators through CSD.
  1. Terry will act as liaison with North County Inc.
  1. Liz will act as liaison with St. Charles Community College.

Potential future steps:

  1. Create a series of sessions with support from CSD to train teachers and industry representatives how to prepare for industry/education interactions.
  1. Provide speakers to industry group meetings with a PowerPoint presentation or other media, explaining how to link industry interests to state standards.
  1. Prepare a presentation for future conferences, in order to share program with other schools/districts/industries in MO/IL.
