Community Connections

Working Group Report

10/30/03 Draft

Community Service encompasses the wide range of cultural, economic, environmental, scientific, social, and other activities and programs that involve interaction with individuals, groups, and organizations external to New River Community and Technical College (NRCTC) and that contribute to mutual development of the college and the various community parties. Specifically, this community connections working group report summarizes partnership activities involving continuing education, workforce development and customized training, and service programs that strengthen the relationship between NRCTC and the constituents that it serves.

NRCTC provides both occupation-specific continuing education programs that fulfill professional development requirements for working adults as certified through various regulatory agencies and community-based, non-credit programs that are offered primarily for enrichment purposes.

Occupation-specific programs are provided through regulatory agencies which include: WV Board of Professional Engineering; WV Board of Registry for Licensed Practical and Registered Nurses (LPN/RN); WV Real Estate Commission; WV Appraisal Board; and the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulations. Examples of community based, non-credit programs would include Kids Kollege, which is a summer program provided for public school children, and Elderhostel, which is an enrichment program provided for adults over the age of 50. Specific occupational continuing education programs and community education programs that have been completed between 1998 and 2003 are included in Appendix 1.

NRCTC provides a wide variety of customized training and workforce development programs to address the training needs of employers located throughout the service region. Since 1995, programs have been provided that impact more than 7,000 employees of more than 60 companies. Previous clients have included: Triple S Manufacturing in Beckley, WV; Summersville Memorial Hospital in Summersville, WV; Georgia-Pacific Corporation in Green Valley, WV; The Goodrich Corporation in Union, WV; and Flowers Baking Products of WV in Bluefield, WV.

NRCTC also hosts a Cisco Regional Networking Academy that provides information technology training for students through a network of local academies at regional vocational education centers. This program has also provided accelerated training opportunities for professionals currently working in the networking and information technology industry. Additionally, certified General Electric-Fanuc computer-numeric controlled (CNC) equipment training in a “hands-on” environment is provided. Specific customized training programs that have been completed between 1998 and 2003 are listed in Appendix 2.

NRCTC recognizes community service as a vital area of activity and is committed to encouraging diverse partnerships between its campuses and various community organizations. College personnel are encouraged to volunteer and participate in both community and regional organizations that impact the lives of citizens in areas including health care, economic development, and community development. A list of specific contributions and service provided by college personnel throughout the region that it serves is provided in Appendix 3.
