List of IUB Majors, Minors, and Certificates

Following these suggestions will save you time!

How to Use this Handout

Step 1)

Print out and go through the list of majors beginning on the next page and narrow it down, spending no more than 10 or so minutes quickly going through it the first time:

§  Put a question mark by majors with which you are unfamiliar.

§  Cross off majors that don't interest you, but only IF you know for sure what you would be studying within the major, AND ONLY IF you are 100% certain that you do not want to study in that area.

§  Do not cross something off if there is even a small chance it might interest you, and do not cross off a major unless you really know what it involves (don't go by assumptions!).

Step 2)

Next, go through the list a second time more methodically. For those majors you have not crossed off:

§  Read descriptions of the major at, for instance, www.exploremajors.indiana.edu/. (Once there, click the far left icon, "Search for majors by interest, alphabetically, or by school"). For links to department / program websites, visit http://admit.indiana.edu/academics/majors/all.shtml, or use the IUB homepage search box.

§  Read upper-level course descriptions, which can often give you a more accurate sense of what the major involves than 100-level course descriptions. (Utilize descriptions in the Bulletins at www.indiana.edu/~bulletin/iub/, and / or within the OneStart/SIS Schedule of Classes.)

§  Read faculty biographies on departmental web pages. Gaining a sense of what the faculty within a given department are researching can help you gain a sense of what sort of academic work and courses you might expect to undertake within that department, if you were to pursue one of their majors.

§  Perhaps call the given department / school and arrange to meet with the academic advisor for the major, or with faculty who teach in the given field. (Don't ever hesitate to ask instructors if you can discuss areas in which they teach or do research! Interacting with faculty and associate instructors in this way is one of the advantages of taking classes at a large university.)

§  You could take a lower level course in the subject to get a sense of things, but bear in mind that lower level courses don't always give a true glimpse into what upper-level courses are like. Also, while it can be useful to an extent, taking courses to decide upon a major is usually an extremely inefficient way to go about the exploration process.

Based upon what you learn by doing the above, you can cross additional majors off the list and/or keep them on if they still look interesting to you. (Remember to utilize Explore Majors at IU www.exploremajors.indiana.edu/, which is an excellent resource. It includes self-assessment tools, an interactive database of majors, and a clear, step by step process by which to choose a major.)

To explore majors by topics of interest, visit the following page. There, click different topics to see which majors become highlighted at the top of the screen. You can also unclick topics as you try different combinations. www.exploremajors.indiana.edu/searchByInterest

Step 3)

Continue with self-assessment and career / major research, utilizing resources such as your assigned advisor, advisors and instructors from other areas of interest, additional job shadowing and observation, career resources linked from www.iub.edu/student/career.shtml, and the Explore Majors at IU site.

Step 4)

If you are considering other health professions, utilize the resources linked from the Health Professions and Prelaw Center website http://hpplc.indiana.edu/ohp/#explore. You might also complete the HPPLC self-assessment questionnaire http://hpplc.indiana.edu/ohp/#assess.
