AHOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE HONORABLE HARRIETT SPEARS PIERCE, PROBATE JUDGE FOR KERSHAW COUNTY, UPON THE OCCASION OF HERRETIREMENT FROM THE BENCH AND TO WISH HER CONTINUED SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representativeshave learned that the Honorable Harriett Spears Pierce,probate judge for Kershaw County, will begin a welldeserved retirement after thirtysix years of faithful and outstanding service to the citizens of the Palmetto State; and

Whereas, born in Camden to Jack and Louise Spears, her father being a former Kershaw County councilman, Harriett Spears was married to the late Lindsay B. Pierce, Jr. With him, she raised their three children, Lindsay III, Robert, and Elizabeth, who have blessed their parents with eleven grandchildren; and

Whereas, in preparation for her life’s work, after completing her early education in the Camden schools, she continued her studies at Winthrop College; and

Whereas, during the course of her career, she has worked for J. Clator Arrants, John C. West, Jack L. Marshall, H.W.C. Furman, William S. Tetterton, George W. Speedy, and Congressman Kenneth L. Holland, whose Camden district office she managed; and

Whereas, on January 2, 1979, Harriett Spears Pierce was sworn in as probate judge for Kershaw County, thereby beginning nine consecutive terms and thirtysix years of outstanding service in that office; and

Whereas, Judge Pierce has proven herself a leader among leaders while serving her terms of office. In the South CarolinaAssociation of Probate Judges, she has held every office. As a member of that organization, she has lobbied actively for legislation aimed at improving probate practice. In addition, she is active in the national association; and

Whereas, to recognize her at her retirement, her colleagues honored her with a presentation in December 2014. They, along with her friends and many other admirers, will remember Harriett Pierce as the longestserving probate judge in the history of Kershaw County and as a muchbeloved public figure; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is grateful for the legacy of leadership Judge Piercehas bestowed on this great State and appreciates the long and enduring guidance she has given to the citizens of South Carolina. Taking great pleasure in wishing her well as she enters retirement, the members trust she will find much enjoyment in the more leisurely pace of the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and commend the Honorable Harriett Spears Pierce, probate judge for Kershaw County, upon the occasion of her retirement from the bench and wish her continued success and happiness in all her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be providedto the Honorable Harriett Spears Pierce.
