Purpose / This unit standard is intended for personnel in the road transport industry including supervisors, despatchers, and other staff who are required to analyse data and present reports to management.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: gather data on road transport company operations; analyse road transport company operational data; draw conclusions from analysis of road transport company operational data; and present road transport company operational information based on analysis of data.

Explanatory notes

1Definitions

Exercise refers to the whole process of data analysis and presentation of conclusions.

Organisational requirements include any legal requirements, standards, codes of practice, organisational and/or site requirements, industry best practices, and manufacturers’ instructions. These must be available to candidates, providers, and assessors.

2This unit standard may be assessed using evidence from real and/or simulated company operations.

3The required outcomes (evidence requirements 1.1 and 2.1 refer) for this unit standard may be specified, in whole or in part, by a party other than the candidate. The specification of these required outcomes is not assessed as part of this unit standard.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Gather data on road transport company operations.

Evidence requirements

1.1Operational data to be collected is identified and is relevant to the required outcomes of the exercise.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – fuel consumption, vehicle operating costs, utilisation of vehicles/drivers/load capacity, compliance with driving hours, Road User Charges, repairs and maintenance, complaints.

1.2Data collected is organised in a form suitable for the required analysis.

1.3Actions taken minimise the effect on the final analysis of any missing data.

1.4Anomalies and variations in data are documented in accordance with organisational requirements.

Outcome 2

Analyse road transport company operational data.

Evidence requirements

2.1A method of analysis is identified that will achieve required outcomes.

2.2Analysis is conducted using the identified method and is accurate.

Outcome 3

Draw conclusions from analysis of road transport company operational data.

Evidence requirements

3.1Assumptions which will affect conclusions are identified and reasons are given for making these assumptions.

3.2Conclusions based on the assumptions are derived from a logical interpretation of the data.

Outcome 4

Present road transport company operational information based on analysis of data.

Evidence requirements

4.1Conclusions are presented in a form that conveys the information to the identified audience, and explains assumptions made in analysing the data.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – tables, graphs, bar charts, pie charts, narrative reports.

4.2Information as presented is consistent with the data analysed and assumptions made, and explains any anomalies and variations in data.

4.3Presentation method complies with organisational requirements in terms of timing, distribution, confidentiality, and security.
