2. A brief write-up and profile of the Regional Centre

A major concern was shown to reach out to tribal area of Madhya Pradesh in July 2005. when 13 districts of Madhya Pradesh, all of them on the eastern part of the state and mostly dominated by the tribal population were brought under the administrative jurisdiction of a separate regional centre created at Jabalpur. The Regional centre is located within the premises of Rani Durgawati Vishwa Vidyalaya (RDVV) where IGNOU already had a study centre functioning for the past 20 years.

Regional Centre of IGNOU at Jabalpur looks after

1. Jabalpur, 2. Narsinghpur,

3. Balaghat, 4. Seoni,

5. Chhindwara, 6. Katni,

7. Shahdol, 8. Umariya,

9. Anuppur, 10. Sidhi,

11. Dindori, 12. Singrauli and

13. Mandla.

The territorial area under the jurisdiction of regional centre is about 26.90% of the total area of Madhya Pradesh and caters to 23.34% of the population of the state. Regional Centre has major challenge to practice the distance education in highly sparselydistributed population, poor transport network, low per capital income and extremely low penetration of technology in the region. Regional Centre has devised a number of innovative schemes like mobile study centres, collaborative efforts with NGOs, schools and tie-ups with governmental networks to enhance the reach of higher education in the area. The regional centre of IGNOU looks after a network of 24 learner support centres in the region and has presence in all the districtsexcept Sidhi, Singrauli & Umaria.
