APRIL MEETING NOTES

1. Agree Meeting Notes, Action Points and Matters Arisingfrom the last meeting

The notes from the last meeting of the 21st April 2016 were agreed. Points arising:

  1. From this meeting onwards the meeting will recorded in short notes to provide quick overview of points discussed.
  2. RC mentions an ecology study by TE2100 on sediment erosion in Dartford Creek:

2. Presentation: Building with Nature: Thinking, acting and interacting differently

Fokko de Groot, Boskalis Hydrodynamic

Building with Nature is a new design philosophy in hydraulic engineering. Natural elements such as wind, currents, flora and fauna are used to form part of a hydraulic engineering solution to create more benefits nature, society and the local economy. The presentation explores several pilot projects including:

  • Ecological seabed landscaping in the North Sea – seabed landscaping of a sand mining pit and creating added value to ecology and economy
  • Reef habitat restoration – using 3D printing techniques to create site specific artificial reefs
  • Markermeerdijken (NL) – Instead of raising existing dikes, sloping foreshores are created to protect the existing dikes. Vegetation stabilises the foreshore and yields extra wave attenuation during storms. Beneficial re-use of dredged fine sediments.

Questions and comments:

A discussion follows about the re-use and disposal methods of dredged material in current projects such as the Tideway Tunnel
5. Dredging Licence Updates

Naomi Hyland, PLA
An update is provided on current dredging, current active licences, number of applications and enquiries and current consultations.
