Who Invented Ice Cream

Who Invented Ice Cream

Who invented ice cream?

Legend has it that the Roman emperor, Nero, discovered ice cream.

Runners brought snow from the mountains to make the first ice cream.

In 1846, Nancy Johnson invented the hand-cranked ice cream churn

and ice cream surged in popularity. Then, in 1904, ice cream cones

were invented at the St. Louis World Exposition. An ice cream vendor

ran out of dishes and improvised by rolling up some waffles to make

cones.

Ice Cream Lab

Student Tasks:

1.Hold a fresh quart bag open and add exactly 1 cup (240mL) of milk into

the bag.

2.Add two tablespoons (30 mL) of sugar to the milk.

3.Add one teaspoon (5 mL) of vanilla to the milk.

4.Carefully remove all of the air from the bag and zip it shut.

5.Place the sealed quart bag into another quart bag.

6.Make sure all of the air is also out of the second quart bag and seal it.

7.Get a gallon size bag and fill it ¼ full with snow. Add 6 tablespoons (90 mL) of salt to the snow. Place your double-bagged ice cream in the gallon bag. Add the same amount of snow again to the gallon bag.

8.Place the double bagged milk mixture in the gallon size bag and make sure all the air is removed before sealing.

9.This is going to get very cold and you may want to get a pair of gloves on. If you do, make sure you cover the gloves with a pair of rubber gloves to keep them from getting wet.

10. Gently massage the contents of the big bag, including the double-bagged mixture for at least 20 minutes.

11.Don’t lay the bag down unless you have to add more snow and salt.

12.If too much snow melts, add more snow and salt so that you keep the double-bagged mixture surrounded by the snow & salt mixture at all times.

13.After 20 minutes of massaging, the mixture should thicken enough to be spooned, but it may take longer.

14.Once the ice cream has hardened, open the gallon size bag and wipe off the outside of the quart bags. If you don’t do this, you will end up tasting the salt.

15.Add chocolate to the bag if you want and eat.

Clean Up:

1.Make sure your spoon and the bag that the ice cream was in gets tossed into the trash.

2.The quart bag that was on the outside of the ice cream needs to be cleaned out and saved.

3.The gallon bag needs to be cleaned out and saved.

4.All lab tables need to be wiped down with wet paper towels and dried off.

5.All of the snow and salt mixtures should be washed down the drain.

6.All other materials need to be placed back where they were at the beginning of the hour.
