What’s New at MYSPP—September 2009

The Maine Youth Suicide Prevention Program (MYSPP) has a new training program - Suicide Assessment for Clinicians. This full day program will be available in five locations around the state. Visit the training section of our web site to learn more.

Back by popular demand—Dr. Barent Walsh will be presenting a day long workshop on New Developments in Understanding and Treating Non-Suicidal Self-Injury. This event is scheduled for October 16, 2009. Register early to ensure that you’ll have a place at this important training. To register, go to

A new resource sheet is now available that provides resources for after a suicide (postvention). It includes information about school memorials, sample sermons, information for funeral directors and much more. It can be accessed at the MYSPP web site Click on For Professionals/Resource Sheets.

A series of Transition Lessons for high school seniors have been developed and field tested and are now ready for use in schools that are currently implementing the Lifelines Lessons. Training dates for teachers who will implement these lessons are posted on the web site. The lessons can be delivered in four 45 or two 90 minute time blocks. The MYSPP has partnered with the Medical Examiner’s Office to abstract and analyze youth suicide data from 2005-2008. A presentation has been developed that provides insights into the events leading to youth suicides in Maine.

MYSPP has established five subcommittees to help achieve its mission to prevent youth suicide. These subcommittees are Young Adults (18-24), Training, Public Relations, Caring About Lives In Maine grant, and Data. The program has begun a planning group on suicide across the lifespan. A focused plan to address this serious problem in our state will be the outcome.
