But that responsibility belongs to all of us, not just to those few. This is the premise of the “member get member” initiative I’ve been promoting this year. “Member get member” is not a campaign or contest. It is, very simply, the way we need to approach the whole question of membership for Rotary to survive and grow – the understanding that it is the responsibility of each one of us to bring in at least one new member every year.
Our North American conferences produced some encouraging results: In the first half of this Rotary year, every zone in the region showed a positive change in membership. Next year, President-elect Dong Kurn Lee plans to hold the events in 10 countries, building on the momentum we’ve developed and spreading the enthusiasm to other parts of the world.
As this Rotary year draws to a close, consider the benefits of fulfilling your individual responsibility of bringing one new member into your club. Think about having one more pair of hands to do Rotary’s work and strengthen your club’s service. One more person to embrace Rotary’s core values and bring help and hope where they’re needed. One more person who will not only show the world that Rotary Shares but also allow Rotary to Make Dreams Real.

Rotary clubs provide emergency shelter, aid
to thousands in Myanmar
As the humanitarian crisis worsened in Myanmar’s delta
region after a powerful cyclone hit on 3 May, a response
team of four specially trained volunteers moved into
devastated areas on Thursday to distribute more than 800 ShelterBox containers.
ShelterBox, a grassroots disaster relief organization supported by Rotary clubs around the world, was among the first charities to reach cyclone victims. Desperately needed aid from many other international groups had been stalled at the border for days by Myanmar’s military government.
More than one million people have been left homeless by the disaster, and 100,000 are feared dead, the United Nations reports.
The team will work in cooperation with local groups in Myanmar to line up transportation and determine where.
The first deployment of ShelterBoxes will benefit more than 10,000 survivors. Each container provides a tent, stove, water purification kit, blankets, tools, and other necessities

Wouldn’t it be fantastic if......
Dear Rotarians,
The RAWCS organization is moving into a new era with exciting opportunities in a number of areas. Record activities were achieved in all areas last year and the momentum is building particularly with the projects to reduce malaria.
As we all know, opportunities bring challenges and one that we must address is raising the core funds to underpin our activities and commitments. RAWCS Ltd is a public company and that brings additional statutory obligations to operate in a solvent and transparent way.
One way we propose to build our capital base is to introduce RAWCS WALKS where a group of supporters will accept the challenge of trekking some of the great walks of the world. We have in mind the Kokoda Trail, the Overland Track in Tasmania and the Milford Sound in New Zealand to name a few.
Attached is an invitation for Rotarians to walk the Kokoda Trail in late August/early September 2008. Bookings have been made and we are seeking expressions of interest now and a final decision by mid-May. The scale and timing of the trip will depend on the numbers signing up to challenge and conquer one of the world’s hardest and most spectacular treks.
We are seeking the support of the District Governor, the District Governor Elect and the RAWCS chairman in each District to select TWO walkers to be the District’s representatives.
Walkers are requested to undertake fund raising activities in their own District and to announce their achievements at a meeting at an appropriate spot along the Trail. Walkers will receive an information package to assist with registration and fund raising.
The support of each Club is requested. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if all agreed to sponsor a walker to the tune of $1 per kilometre, that is, $96 per Club.
Our target is $2000 per kilometre and the donations will be allocated to the new “Future Fund”, the Overseas Aid Fund and our project accounts. The future fund has been recently set up to hold capital on a permanent basis and provide annual income for operations.
Please support the future operations of:
Rotarians Against Malaria
Donations in Kind and
Rotary Volunteers
The Chairman of RAWCS PDG Lou Johnson and Mary will plan the trip and can be contacted at the above address.
Service to others is the rent we pay for a room here on earth.
