What Nursery Do in Autumn 1 & 2

What Year 6 are learning / Hints for helping your child
English
We follow the English curriculum, linking with class topics wherever possible.
Reading:
  • Exploring the features of a variety of texts, both fiction and non-fiction.
  • The children will be reading in groups in Guided Reading sessions and will also be given time to read by themselves. They should continue to keep a record of the books they have checked.
  • Children will also be practising reading comprehension in class in order to get ready for their SATs tests in May.
Writing:
  • Writing fiction from different characters’ points of view
  • Writing a reading journal
  • Information leaflets
Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS)
We will prepare children for the GPS paper in their SATs tests. They will be taught grammar and punctuation in their English lessons, and will be given weekly spelling tests. /
  • Encourage your child to read for at least 30 minutes, four times a week.
  • Encourage your child to develop an interest in newspapers / magazines.
  • Encourage your child to use the local library.
  • Support your child in proof-reading (checking) their writing homework.
  • Support your child when their homework involves grammar and punctuation.
  • Help your child to learn their spellings each week.

Maths
We use the maths curriculum, as follows:
  • Read, write, order and round numbers up to 10,000,000.
  • Multiply and divide any number, including decimals, up to 10,000 by 10 or 100, to problems.
  • Consolidate formal methods of calculation.
  • Read and write using Roman numerals to 1000 (M); recognise years written in Roman numerals e.g.
  • Introduce the use of symbols and letters to represent unknown numbers or quantities.
  • Recognise and use square and cube numbers.
  • Add, subtract and multiply fractions.
  • Calculate decimal fraction equivalents.
  • Find percentages of whole number quantities.
  • Solve ratio problems.
  • Recognise square and cube numbers.
  • Solve problems using all 4 operations including decimals.
  • Recognise and name 3-D shapes.
  • Calculate the area of triangles and then parallelograms.
  • Calculate missing angles.
  • Investigate the nets of 3-d shapes.
  • Use a protractor accurately.
  • Calculate and interpret mean averages.

  • Ensure that your child is regularly using the MathSphere CD they are given at the start of Year 6.
  • Try to use practical maths around the home, e.g. cooking / shopping, travelling, telling the time etc.
  • Help your child with their multiplication tables and the corresponding division facts.
  • Write the year of your birth in Roman numerals.
  • Help your child to revise and learn from their Maths CGP book (especially facts such as the properties of shapes and relationships between units of measure).
  • Set quick fire mental maths questions,
e.g. 21 - 4, 27 + 9 etc.

Science
Spring term topics are:
  • Electricity
  • Light

  • Encourage your child to ask questions and help them to research the answers.
  • Take your child to the Science Museum.

Computing
This term our topics will be:
  • We are artists.
  • We are web developers.

  • If you have access to the internet at home, encourage your child to try programming using free software such as Scratch. They should just type ‘Scratch for kids’ into Google to get started!

History
The industrial revolution – changes in transport. /
  • Help your child to do some background research, either at the library or online.

Geography
This term’s topic is America. /
  • If possible, encourage your child to undertake research (at the library or on the internet) of the class topics.
  • Allow your child to use an atlas.

Art
Artwork based around American pop art. /
  • Take your child to some of the many free art galleries in London. A good place to start would be the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square, or Tate Modern / Britain.

DT
This term’s topic is ‘Ingenious School Invention’. /
  • The class will be designing and making buggies. Research possible realistic designs.

RE
Christianity and Sikhism: Children will learn about how some Christians put their faith into action and the start of the Khalsa in Sikhism. /
  • Research Martin Luther King and the story of the Khalsa.

Music
  • Exploring musical processes (composing and creating music)

  • Encourage your child to listen to a range of musical styles at home.

PE
  • Outdoor – tennis
  • Indoor – gymnastics

  • Your child should bring their PE kit to school twice a week.

PSHE
  • Develop a healthy, safer lifestyle.
  • Develop good relationships and respect the differences between people.

  • Recognise different risks in different situations and make judgements about behaviour and decisions about personal safety.

French
Creating a café
  • In this unit children learn to ask for drinks, snacks and ice creams. They extend their knowledge of the perfect tense.

  • Ask your child to recall the names for different food and drinks in French.

Trips:
PSHE Year 6 will be attending the annual Junior Citizen workshop this term.
Please note that there will be a NO charge for this trip. Travel is free but a packed lunch will be needed. You will receive more information about the trip nearer the time.
