Important information for those entering the teaching profession in Ohio
The Ohio Resident Educator Program is a four-year induction system that provides new teachers with support and professional development during the first years of teaching. Successful completion of the program is required to qualify for a five-year professional educator license. (Ohio Administrative Code 3301-24-18)
A resident educator’s employing school or district is responsible for determining eligibility and for assigning a certified mentor who has completed both Instructional Mentoring -1 and Resident Educator trainings. What are the benefits of the Ohio Resident Educator Program?

This residency period helps beginning teachers:
  • Analyze their teaching practice using ongoing formative assessment feedback and suggestions for professional growth from a trained mentor.
  • Receive ongoing, job-embedded, professional development focused on helping them achieve proficiency in instructional and assessment practices.
  • Reflect on teaching practices and set goals for improvement that will promote improved student learning.
  • Ensure that teaching practices are based on the Ohio Standards for the Teaching Profession.
  • Prepare for future district/school leadership opportunities.

What steps should beginning teachers take to get started in the Resident Educator program?

  • Apply for a four-year Resident Educator license or Alternative Resident Educator license.
  • Attend Resident Educator orientation at their school or district. The Resident Educator Orientation PowerPoint can be found on the Resident Educator Overview Web pageat education.ohio.gov.
  • Connect with the Resident Educator program coordinator who directs the school or district program. The program coordinator is responsible for registering all resident educators in the State’s CORE system by November 15 of each year. At the end of each year, he or she must indicate in CORE whether participants completed or did not complete the program for the year.
  • Complete the requirements for each year of the program, including a yearly Formative Progress Review.
  • Pass the Ohio Resident Educator Summative Assessment.
  • Consult the ODE website on an ongoing basis for the most up-to-date information on theOhio Resident Educator Program at education.ohio.gov
