4-H Shooting Education Instructor Certification WeekendFact Sheet

March 22 – 24, 2013 at Airfield 4-H Educational Center

General Information

The Virginia 4-H Shooting Education Training Team offers instructor certification for adults and experienced teens ages 16 and older. Both current and new instructors are invited! Current 4-H instructors may choose to upgrade training in the same discipline or be certified in a new discipline by attending Friday night through Sunday mid-afternoon. First-time participants and participants registered for the Coordinator Disciplineare required to attendtheGeneral Session on Friday afternoon. If first-timers and Coordinators can not attend the General Session offered on Friday afternoon, they can receive this portion of the training from their local 4-H Extension Agent.

The Training Team reserves the right to withhold certification. Participants will have an opportunity to demonstrate their teaching skills through a practicum and measure their knowledge through a written test.

Please note:The NRA no longer recognizes 4-H instructor credentials. Therefore, participants who attend this certification can no longer transfer their 4-H instructor credentials to NRA instructor credentials. Sorry.

Friday through Sunday, March 22 -24, 2013 at Airfield 4-H Center located at 15189 Airfield Road, Wakefield, Virginia 23888

Certification Options

Participants can only be certified in one discipline per weekend. The disciplines offered include:

1)Archery2) Coordinator3) Rifle4) Basic Shotgun

Non-Certification Option

1)Teaching the Game of Sporting Clays (Since this is a non-certification option,only participants already certified as 4-H shotgun instructors will be accepted)

Cost

Some units (counties/cities/clubs) may offer scholarships. Check with your local 4-H office.

Cost per person = $135 (includes registration fee, Friday dinner and lodging, Saturday breakfast, lunch, dinner and lodging, Sunday breakfast and lunch plus breaks)

Cost per person if commuting =$105 (includes all of the above except lodging and breakfasts)

Accomodations

All meals served buffet style. Lodging will be dormitory style rooms.

Things to Bring

Participants need to bring outdoor clothing, comfortable shoes, and eye and ear protection. This event will be held hot or cold; rain, snowor shine! Everyone needs to bring their own toiletries; towels and linens provided. Equipment and ammunition will be provided for all disciplinesexcept forTeaching the Game of Sporting Clays.

Teaching the Game of Sporting Claysparticipants will need to provide their own shotgun, ammunition (8 - 10 boxes), money to cover cost of 200 clay targets (~$70), shooting vest and shell bag.

Payment will be due after applications are screened and accepted.

The Training Team reserves the right to limit class size in order to provide adequate instruction. Applications will be accepted based on qualifications and credentials of applicants and needs of local shooting clubs/programs.
