Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by Jim Martin at 6:05 pm. Jerry Huang took minutes of the meeting as Ronald Freeman was on vacation.

The 09 June, 2010, meeting minutes were not submitted and deferred for next meeting’s approval.

Officer Reports:

Chair (Martin):

·  No items to report.

Past Chair (Roman):

  • Year end reports and award applications
  • Comments on OC Section council work – just stick to the system and process that have been established and things will fall in place.

Treasurer (Ridout):

  • AIAA June 2010 Financial Report was submitted and reviewed.
  • A check of $2000 has been sent out to UCI. Phil said he can verify if it has been received. Jim is to contact UCI.
  • A motion was made, seconded and approved to accept the Financial Report as submitted

Technical

  • Jeff Norton could not attend the meeting.
  • Jim provided a status on ASAT conference and mentioned the request by LA section for co-sponsoring their brownbag special.

Honors and Awards (Jaremenko):

  • Propose dinners for those of 50th anniversary

Programs (Welge):

  • Master Schedule in progress
  • Kite flying flyer sent out. The event is on July 21 (Wed), Bolsa Chica State Beach, Huntington Beach. 21 head count so far. Confirmed tables and chairs needed for the event. Will have sandwiches. Bob Welge asked for a few more helpers (Bob Welge, Prasad Iragavarapu, Jerry Huang, Jann Koepke)
  • Coordinating with Jim Ball on Presentation; everyone come to pay, pick a day and admission fee. Include two 15 min. presentations. Invite representative in OC;
  • Bob Welge will talk to Jeff Norton and John Rose will talk to LA Section for Space 2010.
  • Jim Martin brought up the notes from Jeff Norton on LA Section’s request to cosponsor their brownbag event. Two actions: (1) finding a public space – Auditorium in Building 28 at Boeing Huntington Beach a potential place. John Rose will find out the access issue for public use. WebEx access (may need software for some people?). Jim Martin will find out more information on “cosponsor”.

Dinner Break during the Program Report: 6:25-6:35 pm

Membership: no report

Career and Workforce Development

  • Planned for a workshop on career enhancement starting with career planning.
  • Contacted Rob Papandrea as a potential speaker for his presentation on “Careers Don’t Happen by Accident” and received positive response.
  • Plan to hold the event in August. Jerry Huang will follow up with John Rose on information that John is going to find out on using Building 28 at Boeing HB site.

Education: (Rose)

  • Plan a Fall-time rocket event for a Girl Scout and a college to tie in with education. The event is planned to happen in November.
  • Put together a flyer and ask Suzan to send out.

TARC (Koepke):

  • Got to visit Boeing El Segundo site
  • Cal Poly and University Utah work on Scientific Payload; new challenge on new rocket design
  • Group has grown to 7 kids; how to use AIAA website to get kids on the rocketry team
  • Dino Roman: recruit people willing to run the teams.
  • Jim Martin: get some volunteer leaders in school and these kids can get kids from the school.
  • Use the website. Sent the information to Jim and Jim will send it to Suzan.

Communication: (Castro)

  • Provide information you want to post on the website to Enrique.
  • Dino Roman suggested to use the OC-Section laptop computer to do website work and store information and update, etc. Dino handed the laptop to Enrique.

Directors at Large: (Justin/Gea/Iragavarpu)

Unfinished or New Business:

  • Kimberly Castro mentioned General Atomic Tour and potential tour opportunities including Little Hawk, ULA Vandenberg facility
  • John Rose mentioned, when in DC, they investigated to close West Coast Office again, and we need to get our hands on it. John suggested to get a written campaign to engage the truth and asked Dino if he had previous paper work. LA has council meeting there. OC does not get much out of that office. John suggested do to everything possible to keep the office.
  • Northrup Gruman has “open hous” in September
  • Space Camp will be held at the formal Rockwell Downey site
  • Jim Martin to go to the meeting on Oct 28.
  • Everyone is suggested to send cell phone number to Ron Freeman (if not having done it or needing to update)

Next Meeting: Tuesday August 3, 2010 at 6pm, Discovery Science Center. Jerry Huang will provide dinner.
