This offer is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background check that is required by University policy for this position, including, but not limited to, a criminal background check. Your appointment is governed by and subject to the policies and procedures of Wayne State University and the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between Wayne State University and the Union of Part-Time Faculty, AFT Local 477, AFL-CIO (“Collective Bargaining Agreement”), which is available on the Provost’s web site at Please note that your salary includes any increase required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Your appointment is also subject to the following terms and conditions:

1. Part-time faculty assignments do not carry regular faculty status and do not provide

employer-paid fringe benefits such as medical or life insurance.

2. Part-time faculty assignments, although renewable by mutual agreement, are for the

period specified only and carry no implication of continued employment at the

University except as provided in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

3. University policy requires that part-time faculty assignments be limited to no more than half-time service. Half-time service means that an individual cannot be employed in this classification more than 0.49 FTE(i.e. eight credit hours). It is your responsibility to inform the hiring unit if you are employed elsewhere in the University as part-time faculty.

4. This offer is contingent upon course or section enrollment sufficient,in WayneStateUniversity’s sole discretion, to allow the course or section to be offered as scheduled. The University reserves the right to cancel the course or section orto reassign it. TheCollective Bargaining Agreement confers certain rights to a part-time facultymemberwhose course has been cancelled or reassigned.

5. Continuation of compensation will be dependent upon completing your assignment in

accordance with applicable University rules and within the period specified.

6. No person holding an appointment as graduate teaching assistant, graduate researchassistant, graduate student assistant, Rumble Fellow, or graduate fellow shall also be appointed as part-timefaculty except with the approval of the Dean of the Graduate School, and by accepting the terms and conditions of this offer you certify compliance with this requirement.

7. If you are not a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, this assignment is

contingent upon your holding and maintaining approved employment authorization.

If you are on a non-immigrant visa and work prior to or beyond your approved

employment authorization, the work will be considered “unauthorized employment”

by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and a violation of status and basis for termination.

  1. Federal law requires that you provide evidence of identity and employment authorization. Your employment authorization must be done by completing an I-9 online at before your first day of service with the University. You must also bring original documentation that establishes your identity and employment eligibility with you on your first day of service. Please be aware that the University will be unable to pay you for any work you perform prior to your compliance with this federal regulation, and any such work will have been performed as a volunteer. If you are on a non-immigrant visa and work prior to your official start date the work will be considered to be “unauthorized employment” by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, which is a violation of status and basis for termination. If you are not a citizen of the United States or a lawful permanent resident, this appointment is contingent upon your holding and maintaining approved employment authorization by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. If you are a non-immigrant alien you need to update this process in the [NAME OF DEPARTMENT] prior to each assignment. If you are a citizen or permanent resident of the United States and if you have completed the I-9 process at the University within the last three years, you will have already completed this requirement.

9. The terms of this agreement may not be modified or altered by any oral statements

or representations. The agreement may be modified only in writing, signed by an

authorized University official.

Part-time faculty who also hold a salaried University assignment may not hold an overload assignment of more than .25 FTE. This (.25 FTE) means that the calculated salary for the part-time assignment cannot be greater than 25% of your regular salary for the same assignment period, e.g., a semester.

We anticipate your affirmative response to this offer. If you accept this assignment, please sign and return this letter agreement and such forms as are enclosed [specify where and to whom] (complete the UPTF Membership Form only if you wish to join the union)as soon as possible but no later than [date]. If we do not receive your response by then, this offer is withdrawn effective that date.
