Foodshare, Inc.

The mission of Foodshare is to end hunger as a part of the overall community effort to alleviate poverty in greater Hartford. Foodshare works with the food industry to secure truckloads of donated foods to distribute 15 tons of food each day to 350 different partner agencies in the Hartford and Tolland counties. Other services provided by Food share include Food stamp screening and applications, Grants for equipment for partner agencies, Education and outreach on hunger issues, and the facilitation of local agency collaborations to promote client self-sufficiency.

Hockanum Valley Community Council

HVCC is an independent non-profit human service agency. It is dedicated to meeting the needs of residents of Tolland County and provides services to individuals/ families in a manner, which will promote independence while assuring that basic needs are met regardless of ability to pay.

WIC

Special, Supplemental, Nutrition Program for Women Infants and Children.

WIC is a federally funded program that serves to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5, who are at nutritional risk by providing nutritional assessment and education, referrals to health care and nutritious foods to supplement diets. Information on breastfeeding and healthy eating are provided as well as Farmer’s Market Coupons for dedicated months. Eligibility is based upon income, residency, certification of nutritional risk, and a physical presence requirement, which means having a WIC employee see your child. Pregnant women, breastfeeding women ( up to infant’s first birthday), non-breastfeeding postpartum women (up to 6 months after the birth of an infant or after the pregnancy ends, infants (up to first birthday), and children up until their 5th birthday are eligible for WIC benefits.

Free Summer Lunch Program for children

In Vernon there are 4 summer lunch sites which offer a free lunch to all children 18 years of age and under Monday through Friday. All children are welcome. No identification is required.

The Cornerstone Foundation, Inc., is a non-profit human services outreach organization. Its mission is to provide a safe, non-threatening atmosphere where one can be listened to, affirmed, and encouraged. The Cornerstone basic mission is to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and give shelter to the homeless. Cornerstone operates a 15 bed shelter for adults, a soup kitchen, and a clothing bank. The Cornerstone also lends space to other community organizations to provide family, health related, and youth programs.

Woman’s Maternity Care

The Maternity Care Center at Rockville General Hospital

The Maternity Care Center at Rockville General Hospital has been providing valuable maternity services to the community for over 30 years. The Center serves uninsured and underinsured women who are accepted into the program regardless of their ability to pay. Patients receive all their pre-natal and post-partum care by ECHN Obstetricians & Registered Nurses at the Center with a holistic approach, including nutrition and lactation counseling, childbirth and parenting classes, and guidance applying for state assistance. Patients of the Maternity Care Center will deliver their babies at the SBM Charitable Foundation Family Birthing Center at Manchester Memorial Hospital.

The Vernon “YSB” is a Town of Vernon Department dedicated to providing Program coordination, information and referral, prevention services, early intervention services, resource development, community involvement, and youth advocacy. Services are offered in the areas of crisis intervention, including brief counseling, service coordination with local agencies, Truancy, early childhood education, and education around substance abuse and violence. The Family Development Center staff is a team of committed, caring, trained professionals and volunteers, dedicated to helping families develop their strengths, parenting skills, and confidence. Our backgrounds include education, child development, social work, counseling, public health, and human services.
