Assessor name / Michael Cooke
Scenario
You are approaching the end of your apprenticeship as a machinist in an engineering firm and you are required to demonstrate that you have acquired the necessary skills and knowledge to join the machinist on the production line, to achieve this you need to set up a secondary machining process to produce a trial component, check it for accuracy and Hand the process over to an operator.
Assignment title / Assignment 3 Producing Trial Components and Handing over Secondary Processing Machines
Task 1
Prepare a detailed operation plan describing how to producea trial component from the list of options below , this should include securing work piece in work holding device, setting up tools, setting parameters, any critical accuracy checks required, safety precautions to be observed and any other specific notes which the operator may need. It is also necessary to produce a trial component to test and verify the operation plan.
  • Turning (Large Tap Wrench Handles, Screw Jack, Plumb Bob)
  • Milling ( Tee Nut, Small Clamp, Machined Block)
  • Drilling ( Drill Stand) P6

Task 2
Produce a detailed step by step report describing how to hand over a secondary machining processing to an operator, this should include areas such as any paperwork required by you or the operator, any machine /tool checks required, supplies of consumables, key stages in operation, specific checks, safety etc. You will also be required to simulate the handover process with your tutor P7
Task 3
Explain in detail how producing trial components and correct hand over procedures ensure that the operator produces components of consistent accuracy without any problems, this should include areas such as correct set up of machine, preparation, detailed notes/instructions, observation and advice to operators. M3
Task 4
Explain in detail how observing correct health and safety procedures can ensure effective setup and manufacture of accurate components when using secondary processing machines, this should cover areas such as operator safety, preventing damage to machine and tooling, setting correct parameters, selecting correct work holding devices etc.
