Tuffets are cute, but baby tuffets are even cuter! Tuffet pincushions are miniature tuffets just the right size for your pins! By adding your own fabrics, button and feet to the supplies in the pincushion kit, you can make a unique pincushion that will be fun to use or to give as a gift.

FABRICS AND SUPPLIES

  • Color Wheel Pincushion Kit (including pattern, wood, foam, walnut shells, cord, felt and bolts)
  • ¼ yard lightweight fusible nonwoven interfacing
  • 13 pieces of fabric, each at least 1 ½” x 5”
  • Muslin – ¼ yard, fat quarter, or a piece at least 5” x 15”
  • Thread to coordinate with the fabrics (The thread is for piecing; the stitching will not show on the outside.)
  • 1 decorative button – about ¾” to 1” diameter
  • 1 flat button with two holes, ½” to 1” in diameter (This is used on the bottom of the pincushion and will not show.)
  • 4 feet for the pincushion
  • Your selection of feet makes your pincushion unique! The pattern recommends using drawer pulls. I preferred to use something smaller than drawer pulls. The shop sample is made using Ace Hardware brand “sliders” that are ¾” in diameter instead of drawer pulls. The Ace item number for the sliders on the shop sample is 5426143. Choose drawer pulls or sliders to give your pincushion the look you prefer!

TOOLS

  • Sewing machine in good working order
  • Be sure that you know how to operate your machine, as the class will focus on making the pincushion rather than on machine operation.
  • Rotary cutter
  • Small quilter’s ruler at least 2” x 6”
  • Basic sewing supplies (scissors, pins, machine needles, bobbins, seam ripper, hand sewing needle, scissors, etc.)
  • Pencils: If you are using light-colored fabric, a regular lead pencil will probably work fine for tracing the pattern pieces onto the interfacing. For darker fabrics, I found that colored pencil showed up better. On some colors of fabric, red was best for me, and for others a yellow pencil was better.
  • Blunt pointed object for turning points, such as a bone folder or chopstick
  • OPTIONAL: 4” to 6” long needle with a large eye: If you have a needle like this, bring it. There is no need to purchase this as one will be available for use in class.
  • OPTIONAL: Mini Clover iron. If you have one, bring it. If you don’t have one, there is no need to purchase one.

PREPARATION PRIOR TO CLASS

Cutting your fabric and interfacing prior to class will allow more time for sewing in class, and will make it easier to complete the pincushion in class. Bring the extra fabrics and interfacing to class, just in case you need to cut any additional pieces.

If possible prior to class:

  • Cut your fabric into 13 strips, each 1 ½” x 5”.
  • Cut the interfacing into 13 strips, each 1 ½” x 5”. 11.9.16
