Aboriginal Advising

Aboriginal Advisors provide referrals, educational support and guidance to our Aboriginal students. The Aboriginal Advisors also facilitate communication between faculty and students, and assist in the development/promotion of Aboriginal culture and tradition at Northern College.

Accessibility Services

Accessibility Services provides accommodations for students with disabilities who are registered with formal documentation from a medical doctor or Psychologist. Those accommodations may include (but are not limited to) extended time for tests/exams, quiet place for tests/exams, access to a Learning Strategist and assistive technology.

Appropriate accommodations should not lead to diminished academic integrity, and are designed to ensure that the student can meaningfully access the curriculum content and successfully meet the essential requirements of the program.

Elders on Campus

Elders will be available to everyone who has an interest in learning more about Indigenous knowledge, culture or to anyone who would like to speak to an Elder for support. Elders safeguard traditional knowledge, act as teachers through transmission of culture and language, are historians, advisors, counselors, spiritual guides and healers.

This service is offered at all four main campuses to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students and staff.

First Year Experience

First Year Experience Services encourages student success by promoting early intervention strategies to all first year and first generation students on-campus and at a distance. Some of the services offered are: Orientation (to familiarize students with the college atmosphere), lunch and learns, assistance with bursary applications, social activities, support and guidance and academic and personal advising in a comfortable atmosphere where you can ask questions in confidence about your personal or academic life.

Mentoring

Mentoring services are available to all first year first generation learners in the form of a peer mentoring program which provided support and coaching from experienced senior students. Mentors can provide great opportunities and guidance on how to get involved with the campus activities and make the most of the student’s college experience.

Student Workshops

There are numerous free weekly workshops available at all campuses throughout the academic year. The workshops address academic, financial and social needs that are designed to enhance a student’s learning experience. The Advising Department will work with the Faculty to determine the types of workshops that would be of most benefit to the students. Computer boot camps are also available at the beginning of every semester.

Student Life Advising

The Student Life Advisor assists with personal, financial, academic/career or social matters. Services offered by the Student Life Advisor include student advocacy, referral to appropriate resources (internal/external), mediation of student code of conduct/academic/human rights issues, delivery of information on programs and transfer agreements and preadmission testing.

Student Success Centres

Student Success Centres offer students the opportunity to meet with faculty individually for assistance with specific areas of study, study skills, note taking, test taking and time management skills

Tutoring Services

Tutoring services (including online tutoring services) are provided at no cost by the LRC staff and peer tutors in most subject areas to all students identified as requiring this support.

Memos/Emails of Concern

Periodically, Faculty and Staff may provide a memo or send an email to a student indicating his/her concern with respect to a student’s attendance/grades that the student is in jeopardy of failing their course or program. Faculty will provide a copy of this memo/email to Advising who will follow-up and meet with the student (if deemed appropriate).
