The Partnership Series

An Oklahoma Educational Perspective on Alcohol and Other Drug Use

Each session is from 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

This series of four alcohol and drug education workshops will be held regionally for individuals who provide substance abuse, mental health, and domestic violence services. The training will be appropriate for newly oriented staff as well as those with substantial professional experience. The series will better prepare professionals to work with individuals with a substance abuse diagnosis or with co-occurring disorders of substance abuse and mental illness.

Section A: Therapy Groups with Substance Abuse Clients

Learning Objectives

Participants completing Section A shall be able to:

  • Identify at least one group model
  • Connect the basic four Phases of Group to the basic five group stages
  • Identify the three primary crises in the life of group and techniques to address them
  • Understand at least separate/different facilitator interventions to group process
  • Role play at least two group exercises, as a group facilitator and /or a group member
  • List three differences between “ open” ended groups

Faculty

Bob Milan, MHR,ICAADC, is in private practice and serves as an adjunct professor for CameronUniversity. He has had extensive professional experience with substance abuse issues and has received state and national recognition for his work in that area. He has had a long history of community commitment and involvement.

Section B: Using Yourself as a Tool Therapy

Learning Objectives

Participants completing Section B shall be able to:

  • Describe the research concerning the use of the relationship between counselor and client in therapy.
  • Develop personal issues and their strengths.
  • Identify ways of healing themselves and discuss how this may result in becoming better counselors.
  • Recognize counseling as a mutual and interactive process.
  • Identify ethics in their own therapy.

Faculty

Dr. Rocky Robbins received his doctorate from the University of Oklahoma in 1998. He is a Fulbright scholar. He has worked in Indian education and Indian psychology for over twenty years. The past five years he has worked as a professor in Counseling Psychology, first at OklahomaState and now at the University of Oklahoma. Previously he worked as a psychologist at Behavioral Health at Creek Nation and councils groups with Indian Families since the late eighties. His research focus has been with assessment, therapeutic techniques, grand-parenting, and effects of boarding schools upon Indian people. He regularly presents workshops across the United States.

Section C: Preparing People for Change: An Introduction to Motivational Interviewing

Learning Objectives

Participants completing Section C shall be able to:

  • Describe what MI is and how it can be used to better assist in enhancing motivation for change.
  • Develop a better understanding of why people change and the factors that assist with preparing people for change.
  • Identify skills necessary to practice MI
  • Demonstrate the basic skills and concepts of MI

Faculty

The Prevention Institute, Kirk R. Wester, LPC, CADC is the Clinical Director of Human Skills & Resources in Tulsa, OK. He has worked in a variety of cutting edge programs within both the substance abuse and mental health fields for the past ten years and is part of the International Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). He is also highly involved in community activities which help promote change on a community level.

Section D: Process Improvement in the Substance Abuse Treatment Setting (Part I): What does it mean?

Learning Objectives

Participants completing Section D shall be able to:

  • Recognize the Four Aims of the Network for Improvement of Addiction Treatment.
  • Identify the five processes of how organizations institute change.
  • Demonstrate the Model for Process Improvement.
  • Participants will improve their overall knowledge of process improvement and how to begin to address change within their program or agency.

James Patterson is the founder and Executive Director of Specialized Outpatient Services, Inc. in Oklahoma City, OK, which provides drug screening, DUI, early intervention, extended outpatient, and intensive outpatient substance abuse services to adults, adolescents, and families. SOS has gender specific programs for women, men, and specific programs for families, and adolescents.James is a certified substance abuse (ICADC) counselor, certified case manager, DUI instructor, DUI assessor, and ASI trainer in the state of Oklahoma and has been working in the field of chemical dependency since 1988.

Series Details

Registration and Fees

If pre-registering by mail: Current ODMHSAS staff members or ODMHSAS retirees are admitted at no charge. A $50 per section fee applies to all other participants if they register at least one week prior to the workshop date. A reduced rate of $150 is available for individuals who register and pre-pay for all four sections by November 2, 2004. Each section is limited to 40 participants, so register early to ensure your reservation.

Late or on-site registrations: A $75 fee per section applies to all paying participants who register or pay on-site and to all whose registration is postmarked less than one week prior to the workshop date.

Registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Payment may be made by check, money order, or purchase order made payable to ODAPCA, FEI #73-1280423.

Continuing Education Credits

The ODMHSAS Institute for Mental Health and Substance Abuse Education and Training has approved six credit hours for each section through ODAPCA, the Oklahoma State Board of Licensed Social Workers, and the Licensed Professional Counselors Committee. Credit hours have been approved by the Oklahoma Board of Examiners of Psychologists.

How to Receive Your Certificate of Attendance

Certificates of attendance will be distributed at the end of each workshop. If you have an emergency and are unable to complete the workshop, you may pick up a certificate before you leave. The certificate will reflect the actual hours you were in attendance. Certificates of attendance will not be mailed.
