The Basic Disaster Life Support™ (BDLS®) course is a seven hourcompetency-based, awareness-level course that introduces concepts andprinciples to prepare health professionals for the management of injuries andillnesses caused by disasters and public health emergencies.

The primary focus of the BDLS course is incorporation of an“all-hazards” approach to mass casualty management and population-basedcare across a broad range of disasters. Measures to ensure and enhancehealth workforce readiness are emphasized throughout the course. Thisincludes a consistent and scalable approach to workforce protection andcasualty management, as well as, mass casualty triage and fatality

management.

The BDLS course is designed to engage participants through interactivescenarios and group discussion. The overarching aim of the BDLS course is toteach a common lexicon, vocabulary, and knowledge base for the clinical andpublic health management of all ages and populations affected by disastersand public health emergencies, through a standardized curriculum that ispractical and relevant for all health professionals. Knowledge gained in thecourse can then be reinforced and expanded through application in theAdvanced Disaster Life Support™ (ADLS®) course.

Target audience for BDLS includes physicians, nurses, EMS providers, hospitals and long term care staff, public health and allied health personnel.

The NDLS Foundation has implemented a LMS (Learning Management System) to register the courses. Students are now required to register on the NDLS LMS, enroll in specific courses, and complete the Pre and post- tests and an evaluation on-line. Upon successful completion of the course and the pre and post course requirements the participant will be able to immediately print their Certificate Of Completion.

Please note, the first time logging-in the enrollee must set up an account on the LMS Before they can proceed to course registration. Once registered they will use the same ID and password for subsequent visits.

BDLS - The enrollment “KEY” for your course is“BDLS-NY-06092015”(Note: The KEY is case sensitive - do drop the quotation marks)must successfully register and complete the PRE-ASSESSMENT TEST. The pre-assessment is NOT GRADED but must be completed. ICS 100 and ICS200 are not required but are strongly recommended.

After attendance is confirmed by the course coordinator, usually one or two days, the student will receive a confirmation email. Once the email has been received the student may log back in and complete the post-course requirements and print their Certificate of Attendance.
