PHYSICAL EDUCATION & PROJECT ADVENTURE PROCEDURES

1)Proper Physical Education and Project Adventure attire:

a)Athletic clothing

b)In compliance with school dress code for appropriate wear

c)Athletic sneakers that are securely closed, tied or fastened (no slip-on sneakers, Vans, Keds, sandals, boots, etc.).

d)Appropriate athletic wear for the weather conditions (heat, cold).

e)Jewelry:

i)No jewelry on the arms, wrists or hands, with the exception of medic alert bracelets, rubber, soft, pliable plastic or cloth bands. There should nothing hard (metal, hard plastic, beads, etc.).

ii)All facial and body piercings must be removed.

iii)Earrings that are posts or hoops that “hug” the earlobe are permitted.

iv)No gum or food is permitted in locker rooms or gyms except for clear water in plastic bottles.

2)Hair that is shoulder length or longer must be tied back.
3)No books, backpacks or other non-essential items for PE and PA are to be brought into the gym or to class. Lock all belongings in your locker (although the doors are locked, locker rooms are NOT secure areas). /

4)For students to be considered “on-time” for class, students need to be properly prepared and ready to begin at the appropriate time. After the passing bell, students have 10 minutes to be prepared and ready to begin class. Students are given time during class at the beginning and the end (total 10 mins of class time) to take care of changing, using the bathroom, etc. Students are expected to be present for the full activity portion of the period. The amount time provided is in addition to passing time between classes.

a)First period classes must be prepared and ready to begin 6 minutes after the start of school (ready at 8:01 a.m.).

b)Students arriving after the locker room doors have been locked will be unprepared and will receive a zero. Plan accordingly!

i)With the exception of first period, students who are legitimately and unavoidable latemust bring a pass upon arrival and should be prepared for class. Students who come to school late or leave early must do so through the attendance office. Students arriving late for first period report directly to class.

c)Locker rooms will be opened 4 minutes before the passing bell rings at the end of the period.

d)Students are not to leave anything unlocked in the locker room. Although the doors are locked, locker rooms are NOT secure areas.

e)Students who receive a “cut” or unexcused absence will receive a zero for that day’s participation, written work, project, quiz, or test.

/ 5)Classes may participate outdoors. Students are responsible for bringing any necessary medical or protective items such as inhalers, epipens, or sunscreen. The student or parent/guardian is to notify the nurse and the teacher when medications are involved. /

6)Medicals/Excessive absences (excused): PE and PA are participation courses. There are no “make-ups” for being unprepared or for other unexcused causes for losing points off one’s grade.

a)Physical Education: Students who are medically excused from participationwill be required to complete an alternate assignment that has been pre-approved by the student’s teacher. Papers are to be one page for every week a student couldn’t participate.

b)If students are excused from physical participation for intermittent days for chronic conditions, short-term conditions or have extended (or many cumulative) absences, the students will complete an alternate assignment that has been pre-approved by the student’s teacher for the cumulative number of days.

c)Project Adventure: Students who are medically excused will remain with their group. They still complete a journal and participate in a non-physical capacityby observing, contributing to group problem-solving, giving support and encouragement, engaging in safety checks, etc.

7)Students are not permitted to use their Physical Education or Project Adventure period to make up or finish tests, lab work, class work, to meet with another teacher, etc. All efforts should be made to schedule meetings around PE/PA.

8)Locker rooms:

a)Locker rooms are NOT supervised during the class period, after school or in the evenings. Students must lock up their personal belongings.

b)All students will be issued a small locker for overnight storage of their clothing.

c)Long lockers are available and are to be used only during a student’s class period. The lock should be moved to the long locker to keep personal belongings and clothing safe. At the end of class, students are to move their belongings and their lock back to their personal small locker.

d)Students need to pull on their lock and turn the combination dial every time they close it to ensure it has locked. Students are NOT to share lockers or combinations for locks.

e)If there are any problems or concerns in the locker room, students should report it immediately to a teacher, student support leader or other administrator.
