UN Decade of ESD:

Workshop to inform the development of southern African guidelines for participation in the UN Decade

Aim of the workshop:

·  To share local / national experiences that may inform the development of guidelines for participation in the UN DESD.

NOTE: Participants are requested to bring any documentation (e.g. policy

documents, project reports etc.) that may inform the development of the

guidelines.

NOTE: A set of questions will be available to guide discussions in each of the

sessions. These can be viewed on www.sadc-reep.org.za

Suggested Workshop Programme:

08h30 – 9h00: Orientation and background to the project

(This could include a short orientation to the UN Decade on ESD, and the southern African initiative to develop guidelines for participation in the UN Decade).

09h00 – 09h45: Session 1: Focus group on contextual challenges

(During this session, participants could be asked to share their insights into the main contextual issues and challenges facing ESD practitioners in southern Africa).

09h45 – 10h30: Session 2: Focus group discussion on sectoral / institutional contexts and experience

(During this session participants could be asked to share insights into how their sector / institution is undertaking ESD work. The session could also include a focus on inter-sectoral, multi-disciplinary and other forms of partnership and collaboration).

TEA

11h00 – 12h30: Session 3: Focus group discussions on ESD practice

(During this session participants could be asked to share examples of practice and challenges associated with different aspects of ESD practice, for example teaching and learning approaches, working with indigenous and local knowledge, inclusivity, participation, values and relationships and critical and creative thinking).

LUNCH

13h30 – 15h30: Session 4: Focus group discussions on extending ESD practice

(During this session participants could be asked to share examples of practice and challenges associated with key aspects of that extend and support ESD practice such as policy making and review, advocacy and vision building, networking and partnerships, Information Communication Technologies, institutional capacity building, professional development, curriculum and programme development, learning support materials development and use, research and innovation, monitoring and evaluation, working creatively with resources.

(During this session discussions could be held on the way forward).
