Standard Operating Procedure for Routine Maintenance of the Elga Option 7 Water System

Before removing any of the covers from the system you must disconnect from the power supply and turn off the water supply.

Since the LC101 and LC117 both need changing 6 monthly, this should be carried out at the same time and a note made of the date. The LC131 reverse osmosis cartridge is changed every 2-3 years, again since the LC117 needs to be removed for the rinsing process this change should coincide with a changing of the other cartridges. The LC131 reverse osmosis cartridge contains hydrogen peroxide solution so gloves and safety glasses should be used when changing this cartridge.

  1. The LC101 pre-treatment cartridge

The fittings for the tubing connectors inside this equipment are unique so if you are not sure how to disconnect them ASK.

i). Switch off the electrical supply and remove the mains lead, then ensure the water supply is turned off (round tap in the back corner of the bench) and allow any residual pressure from within the unit to dissipate to drain – wait 2-3 minutes.

ii). Remove the left hand cover by undoing 4-of quarter turn fasteners anti-clockwise; these are situated on the top and side face of the cover

iii). Remove the white 8mm inlet tubing from the top of the cartridge by pushing back the retaining collet on the push fit connector and withdrawing tubing

iv). Remove the black 6mm outlet tubing from the bottom of the cartridge

v). Pull away exhausted cartridge from retaining clips and remove the reducer (8-6mm) from the outlet elbow at the bottom of the cartridge. Retain the reducer for fitment into the new cartridge.

vi). Unpack the new LC101 cartridge and remove the two protective transit plugs sealing the inlet and outlet connections. The reducer removed in ‘v’ can now be fitted into the outlet elbow of the new cartridge.

vii). Locate the new cartridge into its retaining clips in the unit, ensure the cartridge is the correct way up. Refit white 8mm inlet tubing to the top of the cartridge and black 6mm outlet tubing to the bottom of the cartridge by pushing tubing into connectors until locked and held by retaining collet

  1. The LC117 DI Cartridge Pack

i). If you haven’t already done so to change the LC101 remove from the power supply and turn off the water supply as for the LC101.

ii). Undo the 4 – of quarter turn fasteners on the right hand side cover and pull the cover away sideways.

iii). Remove the cartridge adaptor from the cartridge pack by undoing the securing screw in an anticlockwise direction

iv). Push the pipes and cartridge adaptor to the right hand side of the cartridge pack and then remove the exhausted cartridge from the unit

v). Unpack a new LC117 cartridge and remove the yellow plugs from the inlet and outlet ports at the top of the pack

vi). Insert the new cartridge into the unit, ensure it is properly located within the guides and the refit the cartridge adaptor (check the ‘o’rings are fitted, replace if necessary). Ensure the securing screw is tightened hand tight and no more.

vii). Turn on the water and electrical supplies and press the process button. Once the system status indicator shows ‘water good’ the water is then ready for use.

viii). Check the cartridge adaptor has been secured properly and there are no water leaks, then turn off the electrical supply and water again while you refit the covers.

  1. Replacing LC105 Ultra Violet Lamp

Do not get finger marks on the new lamp!

i). Switch off the electrical supply and remove the mains lead, then ensure the water supply is turned off (round tap in the back corner of the bench) and allow any residual pressure from within the unit to dissipate to drain – wait 2-3 minutes.

ii). Undo the 8-of quarter turn fasteners holding the side covers to the unit and then pull the covers away sideways

iii). Remove the four fixing M4 nuts holding the front cover to the framework. These are accessible at the back corners of the front cover

iv). Pull away the front cover and rotate along the left hand vertical edge taking care not to damage the PCB ribbon cable.

v). The UV housing can now be seen to the right of the main power circuit board. The UV housing has a white body with two elbow connectors fitted top and bottom, and grey coloured end caps.

vi). Remove the old UV lamp by carefully prising off the spring clips, white coloured end clips and wires situated at either end of the UV housing end-caps. Once the end clips have been removed, the lamp can be pulled out through the top of the housing. If there have been any leaks the ends of the lamp may have become corroded and may be difficult to remove, care should be taken not to cut oneself if the glass breaks during removal of the old lamp. It may also be necessary to replace the rubber ‘o’ rings to prevent further leaks.

vii). Slide in a new lamp and reconnect the white end clips & spring clip retainers, ensuring the new lamp is not contaminated with finger marks, as these will reduce the efficiency of the lamp. Finger marks can be removed by wiping the lamp surface with isopropyl alcohol or IMS.

viii). Replace the front cover and replace both side covers. Then reconnect the feed water and mains electrical supply and switch on at the power inlet module.

4. Replacement of LC131 Reverse Osmosis Cartridge

i). Switch off the electrical supply and remove the mains lead, then ensure the water supply is turned off (round tap in the back corner of the bench) and allow any residual pressure from within the unit to dissipate to drain – wait 2-3 minutes.

ii). Undo the 4 – of quarter turn fasteners on the right hand side cover and pull the cover away sideways to gain access to the RO cartridge housing and inlet/outlet drain connectors.

iii). Remove the black 6mm tubing from the connection labelled ‘drain’ at the top of the RO cartridge by pushing back the retaining collet with one hand and withdrawing the tubing with the other.

iv). Remove outlet connector from the connection labelled ‘outlet’ located at the top of the RO cartridge by pushing back the retaining collet and withdrawing the entire elbow fitting connected to the 6mm outlet tubing.

v). Remove the black 6mm tubing at the bottom of the RO cartridge(s), release the cable tie from around the lower end of the cartridge and pull it from the upper retaining clip. The exhausted RO cartridge can then be withdrawn through the side of the unit.

vi). Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect from the bacteriostatic (hydrogen peroxide 5%) solution the new RO cartridge is filled with for storage. Unpack the new LC131 RO cartridge and remove the protective transit plugs from the inlet, outlet and drain connectors.

vii). The new module can then be fitted using a reversal of the above procedure.

viii). To rinse the RO cartridge, divert the top outlet tube from the unit to drain by disconnecting it from the water storage reservoir.

ix). For the rinsing procedure refer to the manual for the diagram of the connections without the LC117 in place in the start-up procedure.

Emergency action

Electric shock

  1. Switch off power at once. Do not attempt to touch the victim until they have been isolated from the source of electricity. If you are unable to get to the power supply you will have to insulate yourself so that you do not become a casualty. A piece of DRY wood or rolled up paper could normally be used.
  1. Check the casualty’s airway and breathing if unconscious be ready to resuscitate, call for help immediately

(From a University phone dial 222 or from a brown phone dial R-999)

  1. Treat any burns when away from the electricity by flooding the affected part with water for a minimum of 10 minutes. Remove and constrictions if swelling is likely, keep injury elevated.

Do not burst blisters, apply any creams or sprays or apply any plasters. Seek help from a first aider.

Spillage of hydrogen peroxide

  1. Wash spillages of hydrogen peroxide to waste with water.
  2. Remove any clothing which has come into contact and launder.
  3. Any skin coming into contact with hydrogen peroxide should be flushed with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes.
  1. Contact with the eyes – affected eye should be flushed with copious amounts of water whilst it is held open. Medical assistance should be sought.
  1. If swallowed seek medical assistance immediately.
