Seed Funding for External Grants Procedure 2017-2018

Purpose

Funding is available to support the on-going efforts of individual facultyand groups (particularly cross-disciplinary groups) applying for external grant money from government agencies, foundations, or the private sector.Faculty may apply for more than one grant in a calendar year provided that the application is related to a different external grant. There is no specific deadline for proposal submission. Depending on institutional resources, proposals are funded on a rolling basis.

Amount of Funding

Awards are capped at $2,500.

Proposal Requirements

A two to three page statement that includes

  • details about the external grant being soughtand timetable for application for external funding
  • a statement of activities already undertaken pursuing the grant including documentation of contact made with Bentley’s Office of Sponsored Programs or Foundation Relations in support of the application for external grant funding
  • description of the proposed activity or resource needed (e.g. travel to meet with the potential grantor, expenses for initial research needed to develop a proposal for an external grant, initial data collection expenses, equipment, etc. ) and explanation of how this will support the application for external grant funding
  • a statement of any likely resource implicationsfor Bentley (e.g. course buy-out, matching funding, etc.) if the application for external grant funding is successful
  • a copy of the external grant proposal if applicable
  • sign-off from Department Chair or Chairs indicating that they are aware of the request for seed funding

If travel is involved, acompleted travel authorization form should be included.

Application Process

  1. Proposals are funded on a rolling basis as long as institutional resources are available.
  2. Faculty submits the proposal by email to The Office of Academic Affairs, External Relations, and Accreditation Services () and to Vicki LaFarge ()with the subject line: Seed Funding (SFG): Last Name, Department Initials. (i.e. Seed Funding: LaFarge, MG)

Decision Process

Final decisions are made by Daniel Everett, Dean of Arts and Sciences, and Chip Wiggins, Dean of Business and the McCallum Graduate School, in consultation with the Associate Provost, Vicki LaFarge.Notification of awards will be sent by theOffice of Academic Affairs, External Relations and Accreditation Services.
