Welfare Standards - Safeguarding

The Training Plan supports Early Years and Childcare settings, Childminders, Children’s Centres and Out of School Clubs to meet the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory welfare requirements. Training available is accessible to practitioners from Ofsted registered provision and school governor run provision, e.g. out of school clubs or pre-schools. A WSCB certificate is awarded for all courses.

Early Years settings should have at least two Designated Safeguarding Lead professionals that cover the hours of opening. They are required to be retrained every two years. All other setting staff must be trained to level 1 child protection and retrained every three years. All staff should be trained by the Warwickshire County Council Early Years child protection training team.

Introduction to Child Protection (Level 1) (6 hours)

Participants will be able to recognise the signs and symptoms of child abuse and know what to do in the case of suspected or actual abuse. By the end of the session participants will be able to identify signs and symptoms that may lead to child abuse, make appropriate referrals using expertise and support as required, know the basic child protection processes and know their responsibilities in safeguarding children.

Child Protection Refresher (Level 1) (3 hours)

This refresher course is for those who have attended the full Warwickshire Introduction to Child Protection course within the last three years. It is recommended that staff attend the full course followed by the Refresher within three years before returning to the full course 3 years later. If more than three years has elapsed since attendance at the full course, staff should return to the full course and not the Refresher.

Designated Safeguarding Lead (2 days) – recommended for the Manager and Deputy

This training aims to develop participants’ understanding of their role and responsibilities as a Designated Safeguarding Lead and explore the nature of child abuse and how they may respond best to children, young people, parents, carers and colleagues when concerns arise.

Designated Safeguarding Lead - Refresher (1 day) – recommended for the Manager and Deputy

A refresher of the Designated Safeguarding Lead course – content as above plus any recent updates. This is an opportunity to reflect upon and review the role, as well as share good practice. It is recommended that Designated Safeguarding Leads alternate between the two day and one day course. If people exceed two years between the Designated Safeguarding Lead and Designated Safeguarding Lead Refresher then they should return to the two day course.
