Web Page Design and Publishing Standards Policy

KernDistrictSchoolbelieves that integrating technology facilitates learning. The district provides Internet access and helps schools develop their own websites. Faculty and students are encouraged to use the school websites to communicate and share information. All stakeholders must follow the district guidelines on web page design and publishing standards policy. The policies and procedures listed below will safeguard the system and protect its users.

Responsibilities

The superintendent will be responsible for interviewing and hiring a technology specialist to develop and maintain the school district website. The webmaster chosen is responsible for maintaining the integrity and philosophy of the school and its policies throughout the website. The district webmaster will act as liaison between the schools and the district to ensure that website policies and procedures meet the publishing standards.

Department heads and school technology coordinators will be responsible for the content of the web pages.Published material must be checked for spelling, grammarand accuracy before submission. It must meet approved website policy and guidelines set in the school district's Appropriate Use Policy (AUP).

All stakeholders of the school district are asked to inform the webmaster of any broken links or outdated material.Every web page will have an e-mail contact added at the bottom of the page for easy online communication.

Authors of published work must take full responsibility for following copyright policies and fair use. The school will not take responsibility for students' or faculty's inappropriate behavior. Published material must be properly documented with references and citations. Plagiarism is a crime. Downloading music, movies, software or other programs is illegal. When in doubt about copyright laws, it is best to ask for permission about what to publish on the school website. It is the users' responsibility to follow fair use policies.

Internet Information Verification

A committee comprised of administration, faculty, staff and students will approve all resources on the school website.Hyperlinks need approval before being submitted to the webmaster. Educational resources and information about daily activities are very important. Resources that are not curriculum-based will be limited to youth activities, agencies and organizations that are undenominational, have community-based interests, are non-profit, and nondiscriminatory. A brief description of the link will be provided to clarify its purpose. Advertising will not appear on the school website unless it has been approved by the Department of Education.

Student Safety and Privacy

Student’ privacy and safety will be enforcedat all times in accordance with the children’s online privacy act of 1998. KernSchool district has a filter system that blocks pornography, hate literature and other non-educational websites. The filter also blocks websites that spread viruses to the schoolcomputers. The school system will not take responsibility for situations that occur while the students are online. Students will behave ethically and respect other online users. E-mails will be used appropriately by following netiquette rules. Students will not commit cyber crimes such as attacking the school or other computer systems by means of hacking (see Appendix).

The school system will not provide personal information about students without prior written permission from their parents or guardians. Parents will sign forms if they wish their children to use the Internet. Forms signed by parents will be re-signed every year (see Kern District School Acceptable Use Policy Consent Forms). There will not be individual pictures of students on the web pages. Students' last names will not be published on the school website or anywhere else. Students' identity will be protected at all times.

Parents or guardians must sign a consent form to have their children's work published on the school website.

Frequency Updates

KernSchool District will make sure that their website information is updated weekly. Every web page must have a date at the bottom to indicate when it was last updated. Links and resources must be checked for accuracy of information. Broken links must be removed.

Accurate and Appropriate Information

The information accessed must be accurate and appropriate for school age children.

The website must be checked regularly for broken links. Information changes very rapidly. The school district webmaster must check the site for outdated information.

No personal student or staff homepages or links to those pages are allowed on the school website. The school website is public work shared by all school members. Personal work that has educational learning value may receive approval by the webmaster and superintendent.

Kern Technical Specifications

Equipment and software must have a three-year warranty so they last for at least three years. A committee consisting of technical personnel must check to make sure that the system is functioning well by maintaining high quality and fast Internet access at all times. The committee must check the school servers so to make sure they are working properly so users can safely go online.

A school website offers parents, students, teachers and the community a great many importantservices. These range fromonline newsletters, bulletin boards, homework, educational resources, virtual classrooms, online libraries toonline calendars with extra and regular curriculum activities. The possibilities are endless. However, it is important to develop standards and guidelines so that the school website provides its stakeholders the very best.
