Review of 1st semester basics: cube, cylinder AND ellipse

Warm-ups: Fanned lines towards a VP. Fast, “touch and go” lines. Concentrate on line quality and speed and accuracy.

Review of ellipses: Drawing ellipses on a vertical centerline. Using the “hover and land” technique. Use light line in back of ellipse, heavier in front to show depth.

40-second cubes. Get the view down fast and LIGHT, then correct the proportions. Morph them so they have attitude- sleek, hi-tech, playful, coy, intimidating,

Rotating a face/door. Ghost in rotation at 90, 180, 270 degrees, then draw path of ellipse that connects them all. Draw new faces at various angles to show movement.

40 second cylinders. Lightly draw, then add details, undulations, grooves, chamfers

Drawing a cylinder and adding a rectilinear shape onto it.

In-class exercise. Just do what the teacher tells you to do. It’ll be fine.

Assignment:

Warm-ups- Ellipses, fast cubes, fanned lines, whatever it takes…

Skymall has asked you to redesign one of the following existing products in their catalog: A hand-held portable vacuum cleaner, CD/MP3 player with speakers, flatbed scanner/printer, TV set or computer monitor, hand held tool box, water filter pitcher, mini refrigerator.

Choose ONE of these products and do 5 pages of thumbnail ideation sketches of the product you chose. Loose, sketchy, let the ideas and forms flow. No need to come up with innovation here unless you are inspired to do so. Concentrate on placement of features, handles, ergonomics, basic usage, power cord placement, etc. Do research on line or look at existing products.

8 presentation drawings of various concepts of your product. Draw your product at least twice on each page. Use call-outs, title, etc. Your presentations should look like a series of drawings that go together, i.e., same title size, same medium, etc.

Use Borden and Riley #37 Bright translucent visual bond 14 by 17 paper, or marker paper. Use colored pencils or pen and marker. Your choice.

Focus on:

  • Speed and fluidity
  • Line weight, quality and believable perspective
