FAS Information Quiz

Answer key:

1) a The leading cause of mental retardation in America today is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Note: Only 25% of persons with full FAS have mental retardation. The rest have normal IQ and appear to be normal physically. But they still have significant damage to the frontal lobes, affecting maturity, impulsivity, and judgment.

2) f There is no safe level of alcohol that a woman can safely consume during pregnancy.

3) d Alcohol causes permanent brain damage. The effects of the other drugs will either cause miscarriage or mild effects that disappear over time.

4) e Prenatal exposure to alcohol can cause almost any birth defect, including cerebral palsy, epilepsy, heart defects, dental abnormalities, hearing and vision problems, bone and joint anomalies, attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity, and death.

5) e Although alcohol consumption by the father does not cause FAS, alcohol can have serious detrimental effects on offspring.

6) a The most common effect of prenatal exposure to alcohol is permanent brain damage known as static encephalopathy. Although FAS can cause mental retardation, most persons with full FAS have IQs in the normal range, and most do not have recognizable physical features, and appear to be normal to others.

7) b/e Most persons with FAS disorders have conscience development that is stunted at about the 6-year-old level as a result of neurological dysfunction, but they may appear to function at any level at any given moment.

8) d/e Persons with FAS disorders need structure, cues, role models, environmental controls, attitude of understanding, medications, but most of all they need constant supervision, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

9) f Persons with FAS disorders do not respond well to conventional behavior management techniques like consequences or time out. They respond well to visual cues, role playing, redirection, and immediate praise.

10) c The teen with FAS disorders may appear to be normal in all ways, but almost always has serious behavior problems that interfere with school, jobs, and with social relationships.
