HOMEMADE LAUNDRY SOAP

You will need 3 basic ingredients; a soap of some sort, washing soda and borax.

The Soap: The most natural bar soap you can use is castile soap. It is an old-fashioned type of soap usually found in the laundry aisle or at health food stores. It works great by itself on stains.

Washing Soda: This is not to be confused with baking soda. They are not the same thing. Washing soda is sodium carbonate or soda ash (baking soda is sodium bicarbonate). It is a white powder. Its purpose is to help remove dirt and orders. The brand to look for is Arm & Hammer Washing Soda. .

Borax: Borax is a naturally occurring mineral: Sodium Borate. It is a white powder. It’s purpose is as a laundry whitener and deodorizer. The brand to look for is 20 Mule Team. It comes in a 76 oz. box. You should be able to locate this in the laundry detergent aisle.

Note: I found all three of these ingredients in the laundry isle at Krogers.

The Recipe

This recipe fills a 5 gallon bucket. It is a watery gel that produces low suds inside the washer. When you use it, you use one cup of soap gel mixture and 1 cup water, so you actually get 10 gallons of detergent for about $5 of ingredients.

Ingredients:

1 bar castile soap grated

½ cup washing soda

½ cup borax powder

20 drops of your favorite oils (my suggestions; white fur, clove, lavender, melaluca, lemon, lemongrass and purify)

~You will also need a 5 gallon bucket~

Grate the bar of soap and put it in a sauce pan. Cover with hot water (about 6 cups) and Cook over medium-low heat, stirring until the soap melts. Mix the washing soda and the borax in a 5 gallon bucket. Pour in the hot, melted soap mixture stir until the powder is dissolved. Now fill the bucket to the top with more hot tap water. Stir, cover and let set overnight and it will gel. The next morning, stir the mixture. You use ½ cup soap mixture and half a cup water per load. You can mix equal parts water and soap mixture in a smaller container like an empty detergent bottle and then it is ready to use – 1 cup per load – just remember to shake the bottle before pouring.

FURNITURE POLISH

Add 4-5 drops lemon essential oil to a small amount of olive oil.

(Olive oil is a natural oil that helps to nourish and polish wood)

Mix, apply lightly to furniture, and buff for a nice shine.

DRYER SHEET

Take a damp wash cloth and add 4-6 of Lavender or your favorite essential oil and place in dryer with clothes to dry.

MUSTY WASHING MACHINE SMELL

If you have a front loading washing machine and keep the door closed, any remaining water in it to starts to smell, which then makes the house start to smell that musty smell. A drop or two of PURIFY in the washer takes care of everything.
