Reading tasks for A Good Man is Hard to Find:

1. Read the story actively. This means underlining/starring/highlighting specific noteworthy passages and/or taking notes in the margins of the story. Evidence of your active reading should be clear to someone looking at your copy of the story.

2. Identify and definethree vocabulary words that is new to you and/or that is used in an unfamiliar way. Be sure to include the part of speech in the definition. (Note: Some words have more than one definition; strive to find the one that best fits the word’s context in the story.) Include the page number on which each vocabulary word was found.

1. Describe the grandmother. How does O’Connor make her the central character? What kind of person is she? What do her various remarks reveal about her? Does she remain a static character, or does she in any way change as the story goes on?

2. Characterize The Misfit. What makes him so? Can he be written off as simply insane? How does the grandmother respond to him?

3. Describe the story’s tone. Is it consistent? What is the effect of O’Connor’s use of tone?

4. Write a question you’d like to ask the class in order to start a discussion.
