Racal 6790/GM -- R-2174A Setup and Install Procedures

The setup for a 6790/GM is not a Plug/Play situation -- It requires a methodical series of steps to get each component to talk to the Interface and Software.

Step 1 -- Set or Check the Jumpers on the A6A1 Board -- (the one connected to the 26 pin circular connector on the rear ...)

Step 2

Fabricate or acquire a complete cable kit from CGT -- for the PC to the Racal 6790/GM. The Circular Female 26 Pin connector is also available from: American Connector Corp. Ph. (305)-591-7530 -- Part Number MS3476L16-26S (Connector) and MS3417-16N (Back Shell) -- about $30 for both. (now used as an Aircraft Connector).

The relevant pin layout of the connectors (DB9 or DB25) is as follows:

Note: The 6790 address will be 37 with address lines set below:

Note 1 -- For 4800 bps ground Y and Z

Note 2 -- a 2 wire shielded cable is fine for this application

Step 3

Verify that 6790/Cable/PC Port are communicating.

The following procedure is normally used to verify the communication link between the PC and the Receiver -- independent of the Visual Radio Program. Any Dumb Terminal program will do -- or - in Win95/98 Accessories/Communications/HypertTerminal -- select the Terminal Program. Also, the original Windows Terminal Program is ideal.

Go to Settings

Select Terminal Settings

Set Local Echo on -- also select inbound/outbound CR/LF on

Select Communication Settings

Set communication options to 19200 -- 8 bits -- no parity N and 1 stop bit

Select the COM port that the Receiver is linked to -- -- Com 1 thru Com 4

Get back to the main terminal Panel and type:

$37S2 and then the Enter key -- this sends the Racal address 37 to the Receiver -- and set the mode to remote -- the Receiver Remote Mode LCD indicator should come on.

Now type F10.00 and then the Enter key -- this will set the frequency to 10 Mhz.

If OK then you are ready to use the VRADIO program.
