STUDENT PROVIDED MATERIALS:

  • (4) red two pocket folders (no fasteners in the middle) This is for daily work, handouts, etc.
  • (2) blue two-pocket folders (no fasteners) This is the writing portfolio to hold scored assignments and tests.
  • Composition Notebook (no spirals)
  • College-ruled, lined, notebook paper
  • Pencils and pens (blue or black ink only)
  • Flash drive (can be used for all classes)
  • One yellow, green, and pink highlighter
  • Self-selected novel (must have one with you at all times)

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES:

English 9H engages students in a high level of language arts study and is aimed at preparing students for Advanced Placement English and college study. The focus of the course is to refine reading, writing, speaking, listening, arguing and critical thinking skills through the exploration of literature and non-fiction works. Students will read, reflect on, and analyze poetry, short stories, world myths, Night, ToKillaMockingbird, RomeoandJuliet, TheOdyssey, Anthem, 1984, as well as non-fiction articles on current events and issues.

A = 90-100%; B = 80-89%; C = 70-79%; D =60-69%; F = 0-59%

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

The Arizona College Preparatory - Erie attendance policy will be followed as is stated in the Student and Parent Handbook. Students must be seated in their assigned seats at the beginning of the period. Attendance will be taken promptly at the beginning of the class period while the students are completing their bell work assignment.

MAJOR WRITING ASSIGNMENTS:

All major writing assignments are to be word-processed and uploaded to turnitin.com by 7:00AM the day they are due.

In addition, a hard copy must be turned in to the teacher.

The following format is to be utilized:

Single-sidedTimes New Roman font

12 pt. typedouble-spaced

1 inch margins MLA formatting: headers, headings, in-text citations, works cited

MAKE UP WORK:

When a student is absent, it is up to the student to check on the work that he/she missed, complete the work, and turn it in within the designated time. If a student is absent when an assignment is given, then the student will have one day for each day of absence to make up the assignment. Students who are present when an assignment is given and then absent on the day that it is due will be expected to turn in their assignment the day they return to class.

LATE WORK:

Late assignments will only be accepted if submitted within two school days and will earn no better than a C grade.

EXTRA CREDIT:

Extra credit is not available in this course.

HALL PASSES:

You must ask permission to use the hall pass. When using a hall pass, you must sign out of the room and return in a timely manner. If a student abuses or overuses the hall pass, the discipline schedule will be followed.

CLASS DISMISSAL:

Students will not pack their book bags until they are instructed to do so. Each class will close with a review and reminders. Students must remain in their seats until they are dismissed.

CLASSROOM RULES:

  1. Be on time and in assigned seat.
  2. Be prepared with completed assignments and materials.
  3. Follow directions the first time that they are given.
  4. Show respect to the classroom, the teacher, and the students.
  5. Remain in the classroom unless permission is given to leave.If the student receives permission to leave the room, he/she MUST sign out.
  6. Do not bring drinks or food into the classroom unless it is water.
  7. Keep all electronic devices turned off and in your backpack.
  8. Work from bell to bell.
  9. Follow all school rules.

*If the behavior is creating a serious disruption, the student will be sent immediately to the office with a referral.

*Plagiarism: Plagiarism is the act of copying or borrowing the work or ideas of another person and passing it off as one’s own. Plagiarism is a serious offense and will not be tolerated. Students who commit plagiarism will not receive credit for their work and will be referred to administration for additional discipline. This includes copying from other print sources, using previous, original assignments for current assignments, and copying from other students. Both the student who copies and the student who allows another person to copy his or her work will be penalized.
