PBIS at MMS: A General Overview

Positive behavior and school climate are priority goals at Midway Middle, and continued implementation of PBIS in our school is a proven way to ensure we accomplish these goals. What is PBIS? Put simply, it is a proactive approach to school-wide discipline. This initiative is meant to reinforce the positive behaviors of students doing what is expected of them as well as supporting students who need extra assistance to reach the school-wide expectations of being respectful and responsible. While many faculty and students may have assumptions of what is expected behavior, we cannot assume that everyone’s beliefs are similar. Through PBIS, we will work to create and maintain an environment in which ALL school community members have clear expectations and understandings of their role in the educational process. In this packet you will find information about our school-wide climate and discipline plan.

Students are taught our matrix at the beginning of each year, with refresher lessons at the beginning of the second semester. These lessons are taught during our advisory period each day. Teachers have been provided with staff development by the PBIS Committee with respect to Tier II of the PBIS model, and should be aware of referral procedures. The PBIS Student Success Team (SST) will monitor the database for students needing further interventions.

Students are rewarded through our school-wide token economy—Blue Bucks. Blue Bucks are earned by students when they display respectful and responsible behaviors within the school environment. This includes our buses, cafeteria, hallways, classrooms, or anywhere on the school campus. They can be spent at the PBIS store to purchase school supplies and other items. The PBIS committee will sponsor quarterly special events for all students who are “office referral free” for that grading period. Blue Bucks cannot be carried over from year to year.

MMS also has staff incentives for all members of the MMS faculty. Leadership Loot can be awarded by any staff member to another staff member who deserves recognition for going above and beyond their normal duties. Leadership Loot awards include “Employee of the Month” recognition and use of the PBIS parking space in front of the school.

PBIS is truly a win-win program for all involved. Our expectation is that we can keep the excitement going year after year. We are consistently defining, teaching, reinforcing, and monitoring positive behaviors. At any time, if you have suggestions of how we can improve our efforts, please express your thought to a PBIS Committee member.

Sincerely,

MMS PBIS Committee

Responsibilities and Expectations Summary

Blue Crew Staff Responsibilities

·  Teach behavior expectations and social skills with fidelity.

·  Encourage and provide incentives for positive behavior.

·  Follow Behavior Flow Chart and complete Office Discipline Referral for all office managed behaviors, including multiple incidents of teacher managed behaviors.

·  Use student, classroom, and school-wide data to make classroom and team decisions.

·  Model expected behavior for students and provide classroom incentives.

·  Work within grade-level and vertical teams to problem solve behavior issues.

·  Keep administration informed of students with frequent or perpetual behavior issues.

School-Wide Team Expectations

In the past, school-wide discipline has focused mainly on reacting to specific student misbehavior by implementing punishment-based strategies including reprimands, loss of privileges, office referrals, suspensions, and expulsions.

Research has shown that the implementation of punishment, especially when it is used inconsistently and in the absence of other positive strategies, is ineffective. Introducing, modeling, and reinforcing positive social behavior is an important step of a student's educational experience. The purpose of PBIS is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm. As the main premise of PBIS, it is best to take a proactive stance rather than a reactive approach to behavior. Setting aside the time for planned teaching of positive behavior skills will reduce the amount of time spent disciplining students each week.

The first level of support in PBIS is universal. While many people desire to start with the most challenging students, it is best to start with the overall framework of the school in order to develop a consistent environment and language common to the entire school. This decreases the number of students who will require secondary and tertiary support.

Classroom Expectations

Behavior expectations are explicitly taught throughout the school year using available lesson plans. Students will be introduced to character education expectations throughout the year.

TEAM Assemblies

There will also be periodic booster assemblies throughout the school year to

Re-teach these expectations.

TEAM Lesson Plans

Lesson plans will be utilized for teaching behavior lessons. These resources will be available for everyone to use. In order to maximize success with social-emotional wellness in the classroom, the use of these resources will be strongly encouraged.

Steps for Discipline

When misbehaviors are observed, they should be corrected. Staff should follow the steps for discipline referral chart. The “Steps for Discipline Referral” chart describes the appropriate steps to take in dealing with inappropriate behavior. It is recommended that teachers hang this chart in a visible location in their classroom for easy reference.

An anchor chart has been developed for students to use with problem solving during the discipline process. If a student continues to engage in the same behavior that results in an office discipline referral, please attach the CDRs to the discipline referral. It is also imperative that teachers have documented somewhere (parent contact log, phone spreadsheet, etc.) when contacts are made to parents for misbehavior. Administration will require that this step has been taken before accepting an office discipline referral for continued teacher manageable behavior.

A chart has also been created to differentiate between teacher-managed behavior and office-managed behavior. When misbehavior continues, or the behavior falls under the definition of “office managed”, a discipline referral is written.

MMS Positive Referral Behavior System

·  All staff members will award “Major Positive Referral Forms” to students who exhibit behavior over and above the expectations of the “Blue Crew” matrix, including the character education skills listed on the calendar.
·  Students receiving Major Positive Referral Forms are responsible for depositing their forms in the PBIS “Treasure Chest,” located in the office, by 2:30 pm on Friday of each week.
·  There will be a drawing from the treasure chest each week and a prize will be given to the winning student.
