Qualified undergraduate or graduate students wishing to be engaged in an intensive, faculty-mentored research or creative activity experience or to be able present the culmination of their scholarly activities at an external conference are eligible to apply. The faculty mentor may also identify a student. The student with help from thefaculty mentor should complete the application. Please complete the entire application. Only students and faculty members specifically tied to the awarded grant may receive funding.

Funding options:

This funding opportunity offers a maximum award of $2500, which can consist of any combination of three optionsbelow. Funds will be distributed over Summer 2017.

-Anundergraduate or graduate assistantship for summer 2017 (maximum $2000);

-Supplies and materials for a scholarly project(maximum $1000 for undergraduates; maximum $2000 students for graduate students completing a thesis);

-Travel to a sanctioned, external conference for which the student or students are accepted and listed as the primary presenter/s. (maximum$1,000)

Up to $2,000 assistantships for the summer have the expectation of a 10-week research experience and the equivalent of 3-4 hours each day engaged in research or research-related activities (~20 hrs per week).

Amount of assistantship request:

Up to $1,000 for supplies/materials for scholarly project; $2000 for graduate students completing a thesis.

Amount of supplies request:

Up to $1,000for travel to a sanctioned, external meeting for which the student has been accepted to present as a first author presenter.

Mentors should also strive to help the student develop the following research-related skills:

  • Identify and summarize background information related to their research question or problem
  • Develop a research plan to address their question or problem
  • Collect and interpret data in an attempt to address their question or problem.
  • Articulate findings in written or oral form
  • Demonstrate awareness of the importance of ethical behavior in conducting research

1) sufficient background so that the project goals can be understood in terms of what is already known, 2) project goals or research question, 3) project design/methodology, 4)how the results/end product will contribute to the discipline.

The following three items are critical in evaluating your application. Please give these items significant consideration and provide the details requested. You might wish to become familiar with the literature on undergraduate research/scholarship and mentorship prior to completing the application (see ‘Role of the Mentor’ and ‘Mentoring Resources’ on the OSRCA webpage:

Budget Justification:

This section is extremely important and will be placed on the budget justification. Provide an itemized budget, with justification for why eachitem is needed. There are three sections in the budget justification: 1) Assistantship; 2) Materials/Supplies; 3) Travel. If any one of the sections is not being requested as part of the grant, please skip over that section.

  1. Assistantship:This section of the budget must be completed by the faculty mentor. For those applying for assistantship, the role of student must be described in detail by the faculty mentor. Describe, in detail, how the student will be engaged in research, including their role in the project, tasks they will perform, and estimated amount of time spent per week (or other relevant time period). It is critical to clearly justify the amount of time spent relative to the amount of the funding requested (see below).

  1. Travel to present scholarly results: For those applying for travel to present at an external scholarly meeting, the student must provide an itemized list of expenses such as registration, lodging, mileage/airfare, and parking (if total exceeds the maximum award amount, state from where additional funds will be obtained). Please note standard government rates will be used to evaluate funding requests. Students who have previously been awarded travel in the 2017 fiscal year are not eligible to apply for travel.
  2. Fuel will be reimbursed based on gas receipts for the trip
  3. If more than one student will be presenting, each student will have to have a specific role to play in the presentation (maximum request still set at $1,000)
  4. There must be a review or adjudication process included in the students’ acceptance or presentation.
  5. Student MUST submit a copy of meeting acceptance letter with the student listed as the presenting author.
