Cook Hiring Policy

Background

This policy applies to all fraternity and sorority chapters that have fully operational kitchens that are licensed as food establishments by the township of Lawrenceville. At the policies inception, those organizations are Alpha Xi Delta Women’s Fraternity, Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha Women’s Fraternity. This policy applies to any new hires in any organization.

Summary

In an effort to provide guidance and ensure compliance to all state and federal laws, RiderUniversity adopts the policy below with regard to Fraternity and Sorority cooks. Failure to adhere to the policy will result in loss of cook and kitchen privileges for the semester and/or academic year in which case, chapter members will participate in an on campus meal plan through the University Dining Hall.

Guidelines

Each chapter wishing to hire a cook must provide the following information:

  1. Chapter representative, a.k.a. Kitchen Manager, who will be the main contact person and liaison between the university and the cook and chapter regarding the cook. At the start of each semester, provide contact information, in house room number, room extension, email address, and cell phone number for emergencies.
  1. National Organization / Housing Corporation representative who will be the main contact person and liaison between the university and the employer regarding the cook and employment practices. Information must be provided and updated each year by July 1st.
  1. Outline of recruitment, hiring (criminal background check, benefits, worker’s comp policy, etc.), and pay practices from National Organization / Housing Corporation. Information must be provided and updated each year by July 1st.
  1. No cook can be paid ‘under the table,’ state and federal laws apply
  2. Background checks will include criminal activity in all states that the applicant has lived
  3. RiderUniversity uses “Sterling Testing Systems” ( 800-899-2272)
  1. Cook must be hired no later than 2 weeks prior to the start of the semester.
  1. Failure to hire a cook by this time will result in members having to participate in the Rider meal plan for the entire semester.
  1. In the instance of position vacancy after the start of the semester (i.e. cook resigns or employment is terminated) the chapter may participate in one of the following options:
  2. chapter members will participate in an on campus meal plan through the University Dining Hall
  3. chapter may contract with a licensed catering company to provide meals normally served by cook for the duration of the semester.

Beginning in Fall 2008 the University will provide the following:

  1. Training and manuals for all Kitchen Managers
  2. Health and sanitation codes from the State of New Jersey
  3. Kitchen Manager Job Description
  4. Kitchen inspection and cleaning guidelines
  5. Guidelines for maintenance and upkeep to kitchens and appliances
  6. University Meal plan options available to chapter members
  7. Suggested dimensions of equipment and appliances
  8. Required signage in and around areas
  9. Required licenses and inspection information for fire suppression, extermination, exhaust hoods, grease traps, etc.
