WRUFC Presidents report 23/5/2013

Firstly may I say that once again it has been an honour to have been President of WRUFC over the last year, the club is lucky to have so many volunteers willing and able to do a fantastic job, and I take this opportunity to congratulate everyone involved.

The 1xv have developed immensely throughout the season, and although results do not reflect this, the team as a whole has improved in spirit and enthusiasm under the guidance of Richard Pearson. If this group of players can stick together for the coming season, it is not unreasonable to expect a top four finish this time next year especially as Jim Chapman and possibly Jim Jones are joining the senior coaching team.

It has been good to see a 2ndXV play a few more games this year and with some excellent results, unfortunately I could not play in any of the games and realised why when I turned out for the friendly last game of season, they say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks and I think they could be right.

The junior section again seems to grow from strength to strength, the enthusiasm of the coach’s players and parents is a credit to all involved. It was especially heart warming to hear Zoe’s comments on presentation day, referring to how friendly she found the club having moved from the South and finding a Rugby club she could feel very much a part of. But that is Rugby, a way of life.

I could not complete this report without mentioning the Summer Ball or Featherstone Fest as some have referred to it. What a fantastic night, in a previous meeting someone said it could be the biggest event the club has ever put on and I commented that no it wouldn’t be as in the 80’s we used to have a 2 night extravaganza in a marquee, however I have to admit that I was wrong (hard to believe I know), I think in the context of where the club was then, and where it is now, yes the Summer Ball is the biggest event the club (or I should say Lee, Chris Steve and team) have organised. The whole ambience of the event was absolutely fantastic, and for me brought a whole new meaning to the phrase “singing for your supper”. I came down the following morning to pick some gear up and found Lee, Chris and Steve already planning for next year’s bigger and better Ball.

As you all know, we have now finalised the plans for the proposed new club house and facilities, which means we need more fundraising events if we are to achieve our goals, sponsorship needs to be addressed as we have let this slip over the last year, we need to embrace the local business community and encourage them to support us. A development team has been established to keep us focused on our main aims and I am sure they will be successful.

I am glad to say that the future looks encouraging and I hope that in the not too distant future, we will holding our AGM in the new Presidents lounge.

TREASURERS REPORT - MAY 13

Accounts to the 31/5/12

At last years AGM in May the accounts for the year ended 31st May 2012 had not been finalised. The final Audited accounts showed a Deficit for the year of £11434 (compared to a deficit the previous year of £266). In year deficit increased due to less Sponsorship, less Fundraising and No Network Rail income (£3500 in 11/12)

Bar/Functions

The percentage on sales for 11/12 was 37.32% (compared to 24.05% previous year) so an improvement on the previous year . We employed a Stocktaker from the 9th September 2012.

Accounts for year ending 31st May 2013 not finalised.

Bank balances for 5 accounts are £8646 which includes £5151 in the Development account. RFU Loan balance £15270.

Approximatley £1500 still to be credited for the Rugby Ball

Notes/Comments on 12/13 accounts:-

Fundraisers/Donations - Bag Pack £718, Scott Trial £250 (11/12 £2172 including Ceiligh and Auction Mart Donation)

Ball surplus approximately £3700 (Auction £3390, Quiz £580)

Players subs £6718 (11/12 £6350) – Team managers responsible and Paypal facility set up

Sponsors income £6840 (£7333 previous year) Less sponsors/cancelled matches/3 x Hoarding income not received. VAT on Sponsorship from previous years that should have been paid over = £1800. Invoices sent to all concerned and received £850 therefore balance to pay over this year

Bar Sales have been poor over Jan-Feb period and Stock out of date. Highlighted in Stocktakers % sales. Expecting low profit this year

Seniors – Coaches report 2012-13

I took over as coach in mid October following the resignation of the previous coaching team. The club had found itself in a difficult situation with the 1st team on minus 2 points and bottom of the league and as someone said to me “ You have to do it Rich, you’re the only spare coach at the club” My own personal view was that I had nothing to lose and probably a good time to take on the role.

At the start of the season as 2nd team captain I was hoping to get that up and running but I soon found myself involved with the 1st team squad. They had lost a lot of players from the previous season and all the under 18s whom I had coached and intended helping along at 2nd team level had been thrown in at the deep end. The mood in the camp wasn’t good and even the new captain had left the area due to his job. I feel that the team came very near to folding and I worked very hard in the first few weeks in getting the players enjoying playing rugby again. We lost both Scott Hunter and Charlie Purkiss to Mowden almost immediately but experienced clubmen like Stewart Bankier, John Rhoades, Simon Hudson and Sean Loftus were all keen to help out. This certainly gave me some hope and we won 3 of the next 5 league games.

Unfortunately reality kicked in and we failed to win another game finishing second bottom of the league. We competed well at Garforth where we had only the younger members available, oldest player that day was 25 year old Will Allman and with three 17 year olds on the pitch the average age was 19. Quite often I am reminded just how unfit the players are, well on that day we were all over Garforth in the last quarter. We gave promoted Stocksbridge a fright and pushed Rotherham Clifton at home in a high scoring game. There were a couple of blips on the way but I would rather forget about those ! You can tell by the disappointment on the players faces in the changing room after the match. Sometimes the hardest challenge is lifting moral for the next game. I for one feel that criticising the players at our end of season awards night, which is suppose to be a celebration of the season just gone, is not the way forward. Please in future come and have a moan at me.

You may have noticed that I keep mentioning the veterans and the young players, well we have 3 players in the over 25 and under 45 bracket, captain Baz Green, Woody who unfortunately missed half the season injured and Andy Rhoades who doesn’t play away from home ( his wife must be happy to hear that ! ) Most teams are in this particular age group and with that comes a physical challenge which the young players take on but it wears them down, the defeat at Rotherham came against strong blokes ( including the prop who was drunk ! ) This was at times men v boys.

We do need to learn from those experiences. Next season again we will have a young squad with the 17s joining us. Although I have now done 2 seasons coaching on my own I am looking forward to working with Jim Chapman. Hopefully Stewart Bankier and Jim Jones will be able to join the coaching team. For the club to move forward there has to be a regular 2nd team, they managed 6 games this season but only twice did we turnout 2 teams on the same day. The aim is to spread the coaches across the 2 teams on matchdays and the veteran players have responded positively to helping out whichever team. If the 2nds can play 2 or 3 times a month and the 1sts finish third bottom it will be an improvement. Numbers at training have remained poor, this must improve or another season of inconsistency lies ahead.

I regularly ask committee members to come along see for yourselves where the team is at. Whilst it has been great to see you all watching and I do admire your positivity when you say promotion next season, maybe you haven’t quite understood just where this squad was a few months ago. Building a new team takes time and patience is required by us all. But rest assured I shall still be asking you to come and support your club on a Saturday afternoon.

Whilst this report seems very negative I am still looking forward to next season and the challenge that lies ahead.

AGM Minutes

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Firstly thank you all for coming this evening. A few items to deal with that may, or may not, appear in peoples reports tonight –

1)Thanks to all who have attended the committee meetings over the last 12 months. Particular thanks to both Helen Simpson and Jim McRobert for their hard work as treasurer and secretary respectively.

2)Particular thanks from the Committee to Richard Pearson, but also to Jim Chapman, for their work in taking over and running the 1st XV this season. It has been tremendous, and with more players available next season the senior rugby is looking more and more optimistic by the year. Hopefully these extra players will result in the permanent running of a 2nd XV.

3)Thanks to Wendy and Spanner for their behind the scenes work, without them this club could not continue to run and thrive.

4)Congratulations to Lee Featherstone and Chris Taylor for their successful organising and running of the Rugby Ball. It was a great success, and hopefully the first of many to be run. Also thanks to them for becoming part of the new development committee for the new club.

5)On the development issue, there is only a small amount to say –

  1. We are now on board with an RFU/Lottery approved development. They will be finalising plans, specifications and costings and will liaise with the development committee on the grant application.
  2. Jim McRobert and I, along with the developers, will be responsible for the planning permission which, after an initial meeting with Richmondshire District Council, does not seem to be a problem.
  3. The Yorkshire RFU and the RFU are on board with this development and will be supporting us with our application.

We will keep you all posted.

6)To the players, I congratulate you on your progress this season and it was clear to me at the presentation night that as a group you are maturing well and the spirit is good. Well done and good luck for the future.

7)Finally, to the junior section, I congratulate you all on your continued success. Many years ago we looked to the junior section to provide the future of the club and this is now coming to fruition in the senior sides. The continued success of you all can only help to provide a bright future for Wensleydale RUFC.

As Chairman, today’s report is a bright one, but we still have a way to go to achieve our ambitions. The next three years will hopefully see a significant development of the club. Our aim is to win our own World Cup before it starts in 2015.

Hon Secretary's Report for the AGM 2013 - Jim McRobert.

The end of another great season for the Club, we have made more steps forward on our journey and have provided a positive experience for players and volunteers on and off the field, which is what the club is all about.

Many thanks to all the many helpers who are all vital pieces in the WRUFC jigsaw, it has been great to witness the support of the Club for the May Ball and hopefully this will go on to be a great occasion for the club and also a significant fund raiser.

We do need more volunteers and also for the coaches to continue the Journey started by Jim & Pete this year, it is important that all coaches stay up to date and continue learning so they can deliver the best sessions to the players, we only retain and attract more players by the players themselves seeing their own development.

Fund raising - as the club grows so do the bills! It is vital that all teams participate in a fund raising event next season not only to shore up our meagre finances but also to assist with the development fund raising.

Compliance- We have introduced a number of procedures to ensure that the club operates responsibly and is compliant. It is important that members understand the procedures that are in place and do not go on their own without first informing the club committee. As the club has grown it is important that these issues of governance and complicity are followed.

Finally many thanks to all those whom have attended the monthly club meeting's and an open invitation to all those who haven't yet experienced the proceedings, i would make a plea that all team managers attend the meeting as this is the conduit by which the information flows.
